ICASA and Radio Station Licence

Postby FO Gyro » Tue Jan 22, 2008 10:06 pm

Can anyone confirm the amount of R48 for the renewal of one's Radio Station Licence if you have a panel mount radio mounted in your aircraft.

Even if it is a mounted hand held you need the license.

I never got my copy and needed one for my a/c renewel. Phoned them and ordered a copy which takes a week which I collected in Sandton just in case it got lost.

With regards to hand helds, define "Mounted"
Mine is fitted onto a bracket that has been bolted to my banana pod. I remove it before I leave the field each day.
Do I need a license?

If it can transmit it needs a license. How they enforce it I don't know, but be warned that if you have a radio in aerie (handheld or otherwise) and the newly appointed ML cops arrive and you can not produce said license they will ground you. (I speak of first hand experience, although it was with mounted radio)

Wish Mike C would post here. Anyone know these guys well enough to ask them to add some comments here regarding practically what the situation is and how they will handle it.

I bought my aerie with radio station licence an renewed it every year.
I thought it was not neccesary so I phoned ICASA to cancel, was told
I need the licence even though I have a handheld and that even if I
still wanted to cancel the effort is not worth the 48 rand a year, so I
just renewed the bloody thing.

HAND HELD

Postby JACO » Thu Jan 24, 2008 9:05 am

Hi all,

Ok, it seems clear, I have 3x hand held radios, in full working order,
and used frequently. Do I need need a license for each one ?

Where, Who, What, do I contact or go to ( Pta area ) to get all of
this in place ?

Thanx, Jaco

ICASA. Will be expensive. First time it R450+. I can't remember, but if you reg them all in your name you may only need 1 license. I have 2 radio's in Albat, but only 1 license?

Dude at CAA told me the following:

All radios needs licenses, whether handheld or mounted.

If mounted, it is CAA's responsibility to make sure that you have said licenses.

If handheld, it is ICASA's responsibility.

Costs have apparently gone up to R650 for first time and then around R48 per year.

If you have been through the CAA turmoil of trying to get ATF or something, you will be prepared to tackle ICASA for your radio station license :!:
The are competing for first position in the go slow.

Ask them to fax you the application.

Fill it in and then take cash (No credit card machine). Submit form in block A (I think) go out to Block D to pay at cashier and return to read coffee tablke mag for 30-40 mins and leave with license. Never had a problem.

PS
Please confirm if someone goes there if you can get a license as individual or if you need one for each radio. (ie if you have 2 handhelds do you need 2 licenses or just 1 in your name with all handhelds specified on it?) My planes have more than 1 radio but only one license, so I would argue 1 license with x number of handhelds on it...)
