Refurbishing Wooden Prop

Postby Tobie » Fri Jan 11, 2008 2:28 pm

I would like to get my wooden prop back to new, some varnish is starting to come off on the leading edges, any advice regarding sanding it slightly, oiling the wood or rather respraying it with varnish and types of varnish or oil to use etc.

I agree totally with Boet - Piet de Necker is the only way to go! I would not stuff around with something that important - leave it to the professional. And I did not think his cost was too bad either if I remember correctly.

No oil, it needs to be sealed against the elements properly.

To repair dents swipe some of your wife's baking soda (Bicarbonate of soda) and buy some thin formula superglue. Scrape away any varnish or paint in the dent or clean it if it's dirty. Fill the dent with baking soda and apply the superglue. A reaction will take place immediately (complete with a bit of smoke) and be done in 3 or 4 seconds. The result is a rock-hard repair that may be shaped flush with the surrounding surface by using a fine-toothed file. Do NOT use sandpaper as this will usually cause sanding of adjacent areas which you don't want.... file only.

Cracks, pull them apart, fill with Superglue and press together, wipe off any excess.

Spray repairs with a clear coat laquer spray.

The balance the prop (major important)
