503 on 580 hours when sold without crank problem.
Was opened up after 435 Hours and 7 years of perfect operation.
Had the crank sent in to ultrasonic and harmonic testing center to "listen" to spinning bearings. Results good to go for at least another 435 hours at similar conditions ~ 870 hours.
Regards
Rudi

All the fuss about the crank and if you buy a new Rotax eng the first thing you will see is a red sticker with the words that this eng should not be use in any aircraft ,or the spark plugs got a clear picture on the box that indecate it should not be used in a microlight , is there any record of any accident where a crank had failed EICH YEA DJY SE DAAI DING

Crank 300hrs
I own Cheetah ZU-CXO (Ch-018)
ROTAX 582 Blue Top
Engine replaced (short block) at 750 hours. There were NO problems with engine up to that point. Used for training purposes at the time so was forced to do rebuild.
Engine has since done over 1000 hours and am now "forced" to comply as the aircraft is once again being used for training purposes!
If seriously enforced, I made the statement that the 503/582 is going to be a seriously expensive or costly engine to run where up to now it has made aviation possible for the masses.....

Silver Top 582
Opened up at 290hrs by Gideon Niemann - Crank in spec, rings, seals etc replaced.
Opened up at 422hrs by Flo Momberg becasue gearbox seal needed replacing, did decoke and crank measured withing limits. Flo enquired from Aviation Engines how many hours the crank has according to the measurements - their guesstimate was approximately 290 hours.
It was noted in the logbook that I was informed about the crank that needed replacement according to manual and that I opted not to do it.
Now at 490 hours.

I have owned 2 blue head 582 and one 503. I have never had anything break on any of them.
I also owned a 532. Now that was a different story. I would advise that the maintenance manual be revised for this engine - 50 hour crank replacement interval sounds about right
As I mentioned many times - I am not aware of any crank failures on either 503 or 582 engines in the Western Cape. The only place I know where these things use to go was Natal and very occasional in Joburg. AE will confirm this.
I have also noticed that - if a crank is going to fail - it will do so before reaching 300 hours in most cases (if not all that I am aware of).
I know of one 503 crank failure but I am excluding this one - it was on an engine that had not run for many years and was stored in a barn in Mpumalanga. The crank packed it in within 10 minutes of running - big end bearing crumbled to pieces. Investigation showed a lot of pitting on all bearings including the needle bearings at the small end. Engine hours on this one is unknown - no logbook found.

Airspeed, altitude, or brains....you always need at least two
how zit guys.
why the fuss. rotax has proven them through the years. why now. the manual states, inspection of crank seal"s,not replacement of a crank..
i am sorry for training schools because i think that most of them will just close down.
a suggestion that i think that might work, will c.a.a allow extensions on these motor"s and if so to what extend.
all of these engine"s can easily run up to a 1000 hours.
as far as i know,no crank failures in western cape either 503 and 582.
on the other and,too much opening of a engine, may result into more engine failures. who is c.a.a blaming then??
please any other suggestions.
