Radio Choice?

Postby Wingman » Mon Nov 26, 2007 2:12 pm

Hi Guys

I am looking to buy a radio for my microlight and would like to know your comments regarding the choices below keeping money out of the account:
1. XCOM 760
2. BECKER AR4201
3. ICOM IC A210
4. FILSER ATR500

I want to get something that gives clear sound and will not hassle me with maintenance or problems.
The sky is the limit..

Wow you have got money !!

Firstly what aerie is it going in then we can advise you...just remember that a panel mount requires a radio station licence renewable annually. A hand held is removable and technically needs one but not enforced.

My money is on the VXA710 Vertex or the VXA220 for less money, the new ICA14 will be in my hands this week for trials from Multisource. Low budget the ICA 4 is brilliant.

Panel mount I have played with the ICA210 and its a weapon, the unit i had was giving out 10 watts, with a Vee rabbit antenna it was overkill.

I personally have removed a few Microairs and in Oz I have heard of the Xcom replaced by the VXA710.

Advise plane and then I can advise accordingly.

Zulu1

Heard you were building a VeeRabbit that could be mounted on a Cheetah. Is this correct?

Panel mount better for 3-Axis I'd say. Handheld for weight shift....

Hiya Bad Nav

Yes totally correct I have made a cast ally bracket for three axis however I am not fully satisfied with the mounting just yet. Steve ZU SSG has spent time with me and lending me his aerie to play with. Most Cheetahs are fitted with ICA 200s and this makes a real vicious set up. If they are used in the circuit they swamp other frequencies. So I will most probably be attenuating them slightly before they are ready for sale. They bleed over other frequencies and are annoying to other local users. Same reason I do not advise the usage of Vee rabbits on training planes as they annoy other users.

The bracket resembles a BMW antenna block in design...

Will post pics when complete.

We are also making a version for the GT450 and developing for Gyros...as well as trikes and 4x4s..

Hi Zulu...

Let us know when they are finished. My plane is being used for training now but otherwise I use it for commuting! Wish I could have a stronger engine in it though!

Post the pics as well please!

Has anyone tried the new MGL Panel mount radio yet? I like their other instruments and this new radio looks good - It should be very competitive price wise......
