Vernon, if you can get to Yeovilton, the Fleet Air Arm museum is well worth a visit. Mainly Naval Aviation. At present most of Somerset is under water. But maybe worth a call to see if they are open.

I am unsure why you have chosen this time of year to visit, may i suggest that you buy a new wet suit..Gul make nice ones, I made the lining plant many years ago..

Thanks for the info. I have made notes. as for the time of the year!. it is just circumstances, that predict when. last year when we were in the UK, It was fabulous weather. They had a heat wave, which suited me. It was July. I will have to go prepared. My son lives in Raynes Park, and will have all the warmies I need.

The UK is actually quite beautiful, especially from an architectural and historical point of view. Take a trip to the south/east coast and your fascination with WW2 will be amazed. Literally 1000's of historical landmarks and war memorials/fortifications to be seen. London is over rated.... dirty, full of foreigners and too many Australians. Spend a day or two there and then move on. It's in the little towns out in the countryside where you will experience the real UK. Awesome little pubs around with friendly folk. Lake district is stunning.

If I ever get the chance to go back, I'd go tour Scotland/Ireland which I didn't see last time around. [/quote]


I love the history of the UK. I have only there twice. Those little towns really fascinate me. I love walking through those narrow little streets, with all the old shops and pubs. The one place in particular was a town called Ford. The little pub was a 15th century establishment, with the original fireplace still being used. On enquiring, I was told that it has always been a drinking establishment. fascinating!! I don't think I will get a chance to get to the lakes district. I have been told it is worth seeing.

Hi Vernon, sorry to say but what Alan say is true. Heathrow Departure Terminal the best place to be. (Was for me anyway).

Have to admit Johan, I would never want to live there. My son has been there for about 12 years now and loves it. Married to a lovely English girl and has two little girls. I will be spending quite a lot of time with them, and my older sister lives near Manchester. I will visit her for a couple of days. The rest of the time will be touring. with a friend, who knows the UK very well.

you must go to Camden, its a town that is basically a market - you can buy anything there and cheap also.
good food in the streets and a lekker vibe

Vernon, i am a pure Cornishman, trust me its great in the summer but in winter its hectic. But if you have the tenacity, why not try geocaching in the UK. Your family should be able to show you around but the Imperial war museum, London transport museum, RAF Hendon, RAF Cosford at Telford, see Blists Hill foundries and working villages of around Ironbridge and Madeley in the West Midlands and the birthplace of the Industrial revolution. If its not flooded in those areas. The RAF transport auxilliary was based at Cosford and now hosts the Cold war museum and a huge static display. Including V2 rockets.
Then of course any visit even repeated needs to include Duxford.

I worked in Ipswich a few years back and toured the US air force bases in the south east, very interesting with many museums in small towns, especially Great Blakenham.

Regarding Eden park, google cc41, the utility radio which we have named our utilite led township lighting system after.

Also if down south go to Eden project near St Austell. My sister works there..

Well folks.
Back from the most incredible four weeks I could ever ask for. the weather was fair, except for two very cold days At Ashton Under Lyne (Manchester area). Was there visiting my sister. hell it was cold!!!
Four days spent in the Portsmouth area, was also bitterly cold. went on a launch tour of the harbour, with the wind blowing icy cold. just about froze my goolies off. Other then those six days, the rest was nippy, but clear. No Rain. I did not get to all the places I would have liked. just no time.

Judging on the exchange rate of the Rand I suppose a holiday of four weeks will be out of my reach at the present moment in time.?? Might have to sell the farm first.

And I still say the Departure lounge is the most important place to visit. They have coffee, muffins etc while you wait!!
