Hi Alan,
I'm on the way back from Namaqualand and checked out a few runways enroute amongst others Springbok and Aggeneys. At Springbok you can sommer land in the parking area it is so big. Both have tar rwys.At Aggeneys you have to make prior arrangements as the gate is lock if you have a groundcrew. There is an open hangar. There are 5 trikes flying from Springbok and plenty hangars.I have contact no.'s for both airfields. As a matter of interest don't think of using the strip at Olifantshoek as it is not maintained even though it has a sign along the road directing you to the airport nogal.Pofadder has a fairly decent sand rwy.as well as Lichtenburg.

Great stuff Alan, looking good!!

Have you considered some kind of on-line tracking? It is great for "marketing" and also a safety feature!

Thanks Rudix, was very chuffed with what my IT guys did. Bundy has zero design skil

With the website up and running, I feel a lot will now slowly fall into place. Tracking was one of the first things I thought of, so yes we are exploring that as well. Depends of course on the budget (steadly growing  ) but we have allready attracted some interest and may get an official sponsor soon.

Sungardens Hospice will be launching their fundraising campaign in Jan 2013. Really looking forward to that. (^^)

It looks like the plan is coming along nicely!

I would love to meet up with you on the way out and on the way back to document the adventure with photos and video, some nice air to air shots/clips can only help vhpy

Rudi, that would be awesome...having seen what you can do with a camera, I'd be most grateful. (!!)

Yes, slowly things are falling into place. I will have detailed maps of the areas we will be flying through in the next week or so 1:500000 Aero maps have been ordered for this purpose. (only so much you can do on Google haha)

The real planning will then start as we corroborate our intended route with the airspaces we are allowed to fly through. Fanie and Merv offered me all the maps on a CD but they are so old, I'd rather just get new ones, as I'm sure the airspaces will have changed.

Yes...before anyone tells me, I know Easyplan is the best  ...but I'm old fasioned and I like to put the maps out on my drawing board and plot the various routes on transparencies. (^^) ^

This trip will require flying in conditions that I am definately not used to. 3-4 hours in the Morning and another 2 or so in the afternoon. I have booked my first "Advanced Training lesson" with Skyriders in 3 weeks time. I will be doing 2 of these every month till we depart to make sure I'm ready for Namaqualand. (!!)

Late morning sessions in the rough stuff....hope I dont puke on my first one!  8)

Great, I will be there to take photos!

I am planning a trip to Namibia (Windhoek and Swakopmund) round about the same time, still need to set dates, so I might just see you somewhere along the way!

I agree with you, I love Easy Plan and my Airnav Pro software on the iPad but I still prefer real, paper, maps for planning. When I see a map and see an adventure!

We all prefer flying in smooth air but you get used to bumpy air as well, I have had a few really rough rides in my life, I remember crossing the Drakensberg in the middle of the day on Jan 3, in my little Rans S12, and then there was the trip back 2 years ago from the annual Bush Pilots fly-in in Barberton, got chucked all over the place with stuff flying around inside the Savannah, was so tired I landed at Middelburg just for a rest. But those were still fun flights and good for self-confidence plus I learned a lot.......

Good luck with the planning and have fun!
Rudi

BTW, depending on weather, I might be flying some of your route next weekend on the way back from Saldanha. If the weather in the interior is not good (like this week) I will fly up the west coast and then across to Upington, Kuruman and finally "home" to Rhino Park.

I am tempted to fly that route simply because I have never done it......

Thanks, I am sure I will enjoy it, just hoping the weather plays along and I "bond" with the new plane......

I am taking a camera with so there will be a report as soon as I am back vhpy vhpy

If I do fly the western route I will make a point of checking out some of the runways along the way and take a few photos.

True words, and ones I live my life by!

The "sailing" bit is especially appropriate, I once did exactly that and spent 28 months on a yacht sailing around the world... But that was before I discovered flying vhpy vhpy
