My two cents worth keep your language clean , I work with farmers on a daily basis, they pay my salary and the issue n boer soek n hoer will not go down well neither on kyk net being mostly for the Afrikaans speaking community ., I think this could be a great show , I get daily comments about the present microlights programme leprachaun

My two cents: Keep it classy, keep it aviation related, illustrate the abilities and safety of an average trike, and make it VERY scenic. I would not go the "survivor" route, putting participants through non - flying trials and making them suffer. I would show-case Trikes - and yes - specifically Trikes - as a wonderful way of "seeing the sights" , but also illustrate the dangers involved, and how proper training will overcome most of the dangers.

I would take the format of a regular competition as basis - but extend it a bit - eg: your last nav task for the day is a long one, that will bring you to a new field (which will be the base for the next days comp). From there, a normal comp day with maybe one short nav. task in the morning, followed by bombing / roll-cutting / spot-landing. Then again - an afternoon nav task (long) - to the next field - new base - etc etc.

In this way you keep it "microlight - flying". And you have plenty of footage from the ground as well, which can be combined with the (scenic) footage from the long nav tasks. Participants are ranked and eliminated on the normal comp rules - you end up last for the day - you go home.

I don't think ML pilots want to engage in a competition-show that requires all kinds of other non-flying activities. This type of format will also keep it a lot of safer - if weather turns you can cancel the long nav and shoot the next days footage at the same field with field-competitions like mentioned above.

Use it to illustrate flying skills / nav skills / the scenery from above: - not eating sh@t and suffering through bushes on foot.

Aangesien dit 'n Afrikaanse "show" is - noem dit:

1. "Vlieende Hollanders; :wink:
2. " Die Trikers";
3. "Seile oor Suid-Afrika" ## (^^)

1. "Dis nie so duur soos ek gedink het nie, enige gemiddelde persoon kan dit bekostig";
2. "Dis nie so gevaarlik soos ek gedink het nie - hierdie vliegtuigies beindruk my";
3. " Dis die beste manier om die land te sien, en avonture te beleef. Ek verkoop more my R 700 000 Land Rover waarmee ek "Cross Countries" ry - en ek begin trike vlieg"

Just to be clear - the long navs take you away from the last field. So you can cover a lot of ground over the days of the filming. On these long nav tasks (100 miles plus?) you can throw in the "skattejag" principle: example - hidden airfield, left or right of track, if you can spot it you can land and collect a "wild card", which gives you points / privileges on the scoring system. eg: - I sleep over in a lodge, or I can use my points to land normally at the next base and score full marks on a spotlanding score. Which option do I take? Or you earn the right to challenge the leader on the scoreboard for a timed circuit "fly-off" - the one who looses goes home! Lots of stuff you can throw in to keep it very interesting! ($$)

James I like your ideas VERY much but let me explain why the skill of flying, bockroll cutting, spot landing competitions, let me show you how affordable and safe it is to fly etc will not work. All good and well and I am sure ALL 200 active members on this forum will NOT miss a single episode. Maybe you will remember the program on KykNet "Vleuels" a very nice AVIATION program where you could see and fly all types of aircraft and see build projects etc with very educational and interesting interviews and aviation talk. Ever thought why it failed and stopped on KykNet after only a few episodes? KykNet and the producers burned their fingers and wallets. This is also why they NOW say they reserve the right to change your concept to suit their format. We don't want them to change the Microlights to horses - do we? (there might be more horse lovers than plane lovers in SA - Oeps)

How does the TV business work? Content draw viewers, Viewers draw advertisers, Advertisers pay money. TV Channels LOVES money! They are a business and a business is only a business if they make money - the more the better!
The aviation freaks like you and me makes out not more than 10% (if that much) of the total viewers profile on KykNet. Ask yourself why is a stupid programs like "Jan Braai " or whatever it's called a huge success and busy with a second series on KykNet. A simple concept of a guy traveling all around the country to meet people in towns that Google does not even know of, set up his braai, light a fire and talking $h%t to the locals while cooking a steak and drinking a dop. The answer: 80% of viewers like to braai , drink and talk $h%t and for a bonus the other 20% will learn about their erfenis.

So to convince a bunch of NON aviation people to screen a show with microlights and a lot of flying will not be easy. The "aviation aspect" must be camouflaged in a game or reality show of teamwork, travel, conspiracy, survival, strategy, adrenaline, education, adventure, competition and the list except the swear word AVIATION goes on. It's about how to create all this without loosing 80%of the viewers. Its about team members voting each other off. Not the boring stuff of the losers go home and the winners take all. In the gripping stuff game shows the strong contenders get voted off by the weaker ones. -game plan strategy. I see pilots getting lost at unknown places (scenic places - for the viewers) as their ground crew did not manage to pick up all the pieces of the map. They must see it is nice to fly without telling them so, if you catch my drift?

This suggestion is quickly becoming a reality now, however the only factor is about budget. Knowing that sponsorship in the microlight aviation is basically non existent. This show will have great exposure for who ever comes on board, better than TV advertising. Having a lot of smaller sponsors will also creates a headache and will be almost practical impossible to give equal exposure to all. What I really would like to hear from you is some creative ideas to fund this project. I don't know how you will feel to pay an entrance fee to take part in the competition. Based on the budget it could be in the region of R1500 - R2000 per person. It also could mean that we use 4 different teams in each episode (for 13 episodes). Maybe each contender can get an amount to raise through his own sponsors (own bussiness, employer, familie, friends etc). We can always make this part of the competition - The first 4 teams to come up with the entry funds is in the show. How about MISASA for any shortfall? Alan? Bundy? Speak to me. Good exposure for MISASA and the sport. The aim here is at least R30K per episode X 13. Maybe you are working for a company like Microsoft, Engen, Shell, and you have a healthy company budget to blow on marketing. Please someone tell me so.

Waiting for all your PM's with your ideas of how we can fund this. :) or e-mail me at marius(at)infozone(dot)tv (^^)
