Delmas "International?????"
Delmas "International?????"
So last night I was watching DSTV and it landed up on this interview with the mayor of Delmas . She said the talks for a "international airport" are well under way?????. Well I fly from Microland and I’m sorry to say this, but if it happens, i think we can say bye-bye to Microland / Bapsfontein / Fly in / SR / Petit.
Do you guys know anything around this??

There has been "talk" for the last 5 years of a cargo mainly airport being constructed, heard Parys, Vereeniging, Randfontein and now Delmas?

I agree! I think that one more municipality has been hoodwinked into believing that an international airport will be coming their way. I recall that the same thing happened with the Dunnottar air force base. The Springs Municipality was made to believe that an international consortium was going to turn that base into a cargo hub for the whole Southern African continent. Needless to say that the whole business community of Springs and Nigel rallied around with meetings and God knows what else, with people buying up property at inflated prices in and around this area. That was 15 years ago and guess what!... the only ones smiling were the property sellers.nicow wrote:...in their dreams...

It's a fact that our airspace is going to change in the future. Denottor falls outside Ekurhuleni and not likely to happen there but rather inside the Ekurhuleni borders. Ekurhuleni was earmarked as the only Aerotropolis in South Africa. Google Aerotropolis by Prof Kasarda. I was privileged to meet Prof John Kasarda on his visit last year and was hired and flown with him all over Ekurhuleni for an aerial photo shoot. This was a more than R20mil project to get him to South Africa on a two week visit and Gauteng (Ekurhuleni specific) meet with all the requirements of an Aerotropolis with all the airports around us.

The Dunnottar attempt at a mainly cargo int airport was the "brainchild" of a certain Mr Braam Loots. His claim to fame and where I first had the mis-fortune to work under him was as MD of Safair. Under his 'guidance' Safair went through its first re-trenchments in its history, (He did not even have the guts/decency to address his intended retrenchment victims, simply had them brought to the office where they were shown a video of him giving his reasons for the retrenchments, then they were asked for their company id's and escorted off the premises immediately and sent to a rented house in Bonaeropark where Safair could make arrangements to get any company property they may have from them without 'risking' their presence at the company), lost USD14,000,000 through Angola Air Charter, then went through another round of retrenchments after which he left and became ACSA's first MD/CEO. After an appalling run there he was replaced by Dirk Ackerman and then suddenly the Dunnottar story broke. If he is still involved then I dont think its likely.mcfly wrote:I agree! Out of curiosity, what happened to wonderboom.??? If they havent done it or succeeded , then I think the chances of Delmas success are slim.Very slim. Have been out of the loop with all the aviation info for a while now, but as far as I understand Wonderboom are still in the "prosses" of getting international status.

Dunnottar does indeed fall into the Ekurhuleni metro borders.(see Map) I suppose that the old adage"wait and see" will apply hereZS-NEL wrote:It's a fact that our airspace is going to change in the future. Re: Delmas "International?????"
this is very similar to the Margate issue a couple of years ago Some idiot from the our municipality gets the bright idea, that the Margate runway needs lenthening and a whole lot of other upgrates. What a laugh. Some fancy figures were given that were definetaly a thumb suck by someone who does not know what a cubic metre of earth looks like.

Thanks Leon,Tumbleweed wrote:The greater Gauteng east area.
Wonder why everything needs a new name?

Shite, I lived in Durban since 1983 and can't find my way around, viz.
To get to work, route towards Etekwini and take the Dr. Yusaf Dada offramp into Princess Maloefe, right into Constance Mazibuku ...
I couldn't even find my house after 20 years -
Take Robert Susishi and left down Margaret Husafa and ....
What a pity.

Sorry you are correct. Should have read Delmas and not Dunnotar.

Leon...I wouldnt worry too much. What a politician say's and what they actually DO are two very different thingsSlider wrote:So last night I was watching DSTV and it landed up on this interview with the mayor of Delmas . Look at ODI, north of Kroon airfield. Wasnt it supposed to be a large airport ( a new gateway to the north )..... now a dragstrip ?
