Im not sure i agree?? - Lets debate this. He doesnt look like some nutter who just showed up and at the airfield and started doing that. Looks like its an airshow, there was comentary all the way through and looks like he was prepared. So begs the question, (and bare in mind im not a trike flyer) BUT - can a trike be modified to perform that kinda move specifically for airshow/airobatic performances...?? Clearly this oke isnt some backyard chop who doesnt know what hes doing... personally i think its awesome.

Take for example those of you familiar with motocross. 7 years ago a "backflip" was unheard of, now its a requirement in a decent freestyle routine. so the game changed... why can the game not change in trike flying?? technology has improved dramatically, wing design is better and more efficient than ever, could it not be feasable that trike plying progresses to that level??? why do we not freak out when an extra 300 does a low level knife edge flyby?? Someone years ago had to do it and it caught on??? soooo is it that hard to imagine that we could get to that????

DISCLAIMER - IM NOT SAYING that every oke who owns a trike should now go out start flying like the oke in the video. SAFETY FIRST and within the manufacturers specs OF COURSE - BUT ??????

Hi Dish

The problem comes in that yes maybe he has made mods to his trike - Now some rookie pilot comes along and without training he is buried a week later and everybody is asking why what happened :?:
The trikes theoretically are not designed to do that :!:
And well one small mistake and it is over - now the general public see this and well how many guys get hurt trying that backflip on a bike that we NEVER hear of :?:
Even the professionals make mistakes and well the dude was risking not only hurting himself but the dude that has 70hours on his License and a quiet saturday afternoon with the perfect WX.
The margin of error is so small that you just fart at the wrong time and it will be OVER :!:
I have seen some really stupid accidents because of somebody trying something that they saw at an Airshow or at a small flyin.

Just my 2c

Sad to look into the faces of the Family at the Funeral when the Wife walks past a group of pilots and the question of WHY is written all over her face.
Sorry just seen too many deaths because of Stupidity.

Yeah - I hear you and in many aspects i agree... but gav, you cant fix stupid. I have an NPL CCM license and a small chunk of hours now... but i am under no misconception about my skill level, experience and limits - that said not every oke whose qualified with a PPL or similar races to roll a cessna, i mean its common sense, the guys that do want to, go and do courses and conversions to an aerobatic license - we LOVE watching aerobatics but are not skilled enough to do it.

I cannot believe the point that every oke who wanted to fly would do that. Sign up at a school, do the license, gain the hours, do an aerobatic license and go on to bigger things?? i dunno, just an interesting discussion??

There are lots of urban legends about South African pilots who loop trikes and I have always wondered how you keep positive G over the top.

This guy seems to have no trouble, and also seems to be able to power out of a hammer stall. It looks like he is running a 503, but if it is, I suspect it is producing way more power than mine. :( He also seems to be frighteningly low.

Very impressive, but not for me.

You are very right Dish in that yes 90% of Pilots will do it the correct way but there is allways that one that says "Common it cannot be so Difficult :?: "
He writes himself off and we all get painted with the same brush

No i do not say we are all like that and yes most of us respect our Limits but like i said you just need one and then ## ##
Look i would love to do some freaky stuff but i know that without the right aircraft, Training and practice it is Suicide.
I am also just ($$) ($$) here. I just get so angry at "STUPID" as you call it.

Very interesting conversation over a beer or two i agree (^^) (^^) (^^)

Sorry venting cos i have not flown for a while and getting very (**) (**) (**) ** **

It is a real trike with take off & landing, but the rest looks like a radio controlled model.

It's like when you learn to ride a bike..you start off safe and very cautious...after couple of track days, you get your knees down and then you the king of the Satellite road coz you no longer afraid of taking the bends at high speed and you know how to handle your bike...there after you start wheeling and what do you know...you wheeling your bike..not long after that, you on your a$$ wondering what went wrong...Pointing at myself :)

I think that people in general gets too confident and the fear that kept the safe side in tact goes out the window...just in this game, you will not be able to wonder went what wrong cos it will be too late...

At first I was afraid to nail it bar in,foot flat low level..now I do it over the runway where I know its safe and I let up a bit at a time, not popping the bar forward..that way I still maintain at least 60mph on climb out and it feels awesome :!: :!: :!:

As I read/heard..."Learn from others mistakes as you will not live long enough to make them all yourself"

I dont care how much he reinforces that wing if that motor splutters or dies at the top of the loop when his undercart is on top that wing is going to fold.View the video at about 50 seconds, he almost never made it. Also note the year that was done. Early days of trikes and technology and also safety awareness. Also don't think that it is a radio control model as the engine notes match when the throttle inputs should be getting done.

What scares me is that does not look like a "highly modified" plane at all! I also cannot think how he is able to maintain positive G at the top??

Luckily I think I'll always be too Piss Bang to try anything even close to that! (^^)
