503 or 582 Which motor would be sufficient?

Postby DieselFan » Tue Mar 14, 2006 5:37 pm

Pilot weight 80kg, with RARE (Atleast I think so) pax of 100kg
Windlass empty weight 150kg
Aquilla 582 180kg
Aqulla 503 160kg (20kg diff)
Safari 503 119kg - no wing
Safari 582 124kg - no wing (only 5kg diff ??)
Cobra 503 153kg - no wing
Cobra 582 186kg - no wing

Would I be happy with a 503, what is the advantage of a 503 over a 582?
Should I rather say WHATS THE MAX that a 503, 582 can handle? Weight and Alt?
In Gauteng mainly...so 5300'[/list]

There is no compensation for that additional power. To me a 503 motor is a fantastic, bullet proof little motor, but if you are into traveling 2-up often and even more want to do the longer distances dual, loaded then the 503 is a little under powered. I'm not sure if you guys need to climb from ground level to 8000 AGL often (i.e. 13200ft), but we here in Cape Town have to take off at sea level and then climb to 8500 ft to clear some of the mountains to go inland. Dual, a 503 can't handle this. You'll spend your entire flight trying to climb. It's a different story if you fly solo, then a 503 has more then enough power. I travel fully loaded 70liter fuel, baggage, and me (80kg) and I still have 500fpm climb at 8000 ft AMSL. Remmember my plane is jetted for sea level.

If you can afford the extra cost go for the extra 12 ponies.

one up, at the coast, a 503 climbs like a fart out the bath.
Gauteng, I'd go for a 582, even though i am a 503 man, (cause I live by the beach)

What would the weight equivalent be between them? Eg a 582 with 250kg is like a 503 with 200kg. I mean if I look at a Safari 503 @ 120kg surely it would perform like or VERY close to an aquilla 582 @ 180kg?

How much does the wing affect short take off etc? I seen or heard on Damiens vids about a double surface taking off sooner.

I don't plan on flying 8000' agl often or within the foreseeable future.

Are there ANY pros to a 503 except for initial price? What about fuel, servicing?

I suppose you could see it that way, weight is everything, the 582 has a 25% improvement in power over the 503, but if the plane's weight at flying config, i.e. Safari 503 @120Kg plus you 80KG and 30liter fuel 21kg = 221kg

the aquilla 582 would be 180kg +80+21 = 281, 29% heavier.

Dual with two 80 kg peeps, Safari 120 + 80 + 80 + 21 = 301
Aquila 180 + 80+ 80 + 21 = 361, 19% heavier.

So based on these your Aquila would perform better two up than the Safari but the other way around for solo.

503, fuel same as 582, could be slightly heavier on juice, depending on what your cruise rev is. Servicing exactly the same as the 582

The 582 plus waterworks is about 2 KG heavier than the 503, so I would go for the Safari at 120kg with the 582 motor in it. That would be hot.

Cool thanks for the replies! And what about wing config? Would a double surface give me 20kg for free?

Make sure you compare apples with apples, get the wing weight and add it to the safari/cobra before you choose. I guess with the wings added they are all in the same ballpark. Let me know. I'm interested.

Struggling or just delayed on the weights of the wings but for now here's rough guide

On the Cobra or Safari
Spirit 15sqr = 52kg
Still 17 = 46 kg
Stream 16 = 50 kg
Stanger 14.8 = 47 kg
Profi 14.5 = 49 kg

I'm not sure which wing is on the Aquilla by default but on the website it says wingspan 10.5m, so I'd have to match that to the closest to the ones above.

The Aquilla II wing is a 15 Square Meter, wing so the equivalent is a Profi or 49kg or a stranger 47kg. lets cal it +/- 50kg

The the 582 Safari will be 124 + 50 =174
close to the 582 Aquilla 180 kg

Safari 503 = 119 + 50 = 170 f it is correct!
Aquilla 503 = 160
