Hole in piston again!!!???

Postby Smiley » Mon Jan 30, 2006 3:03 pm

Now I had enough!! :evil:

Thursday morning myself and other pilots landed at the Escourt Shell Ultra City. When I took-off my RPM started to drop and suddenly a complete loss of power. I managed to do a forced landing in an open area next to the N3 highway. :shock:

On later inspection I learned that I have burned a hole in my piston again!!! :shock: :shock:

The first time everybody was adamant that it was caused due to a lean fuel mixture. I since have increased my base jet size to 155(Rotax 503-Springs, Gauteng area).

Now it has happened again. What can cause this?? All the carb settings are correct. Can it be the ignition system?

Hi Smiley. Bit of a bugger :shock:

Ever considered fitting an EGT guage and probes? When I fitted them to my 582 I was amazed what you can find out... tells you all sorts of things about your engine. Easy way to spot un-balanced carbs. Also found that at certain RPM my EGT's shot up. Some people claim that EGT's are more important than CHT's.

Hi Smiley.

Many questions from me, and I will be able to assist. Some of the questions:

When did you burn the first hole ie how many hours ago.
Did you change both pistons or just the one that you burnt.
Have you ever used AVGAS?
Have you burnt the same cylinder piston as before, or the other one.
Do you have dual CHT's
Do you have dual EGT's

Etc., etc.,

As you can see, many questions, and they all need to be answered to help me look in the right direction, before I can help you.

Please call me on 084 2663359, and I am certain I will be able to help you find the answer.

Well done for staying cool and successfully pulling off the emergency.

Talk later,

Hello David and thank you for your help!!
When did you burn the first hole ie how many hours ago.
Did you change both pistons or just the one that you burnt.
Have you ever used AVGAS?
Have you burnt the same cylinder piston as before, or the other one.
Do you have dual CHT's
Do you have dual EGT's
Answers:
* +- 40 hrs ago
* Just the one that burned, other piston was still perfect
* About 50 litres in 200 hrs
* Same piston and in the same area over a sparkplug
* No CHT's
* I have dual EGT's

If this wont help, I will give you a call, thanks again!!
