Re: Fire extinguishers
Thanks Frootbat.
Seems there are a couple of options if you go for fire serive specialists, rather than aviation specialists!

Re: Fire extinguishers
I use a thing called a fireball in my gyro.
This extinguisher is self activated by fire.
Your petrol tank is at the back of a gyro en you would not be able to reach a fire with a normal extinguisher.
Also open cockpit, the wind will probably have an effect on an extinguisher.
I am just wondering if you would be able to operate a normal extinguisher in an airplane on your own ?
Normal extinguisher would probably be more legal but definitely less practical.

Re: Fire extinguishers
I believe your risks are greater on the ground than in the air. When last did you hear of a gyro setting alight in the air. It's post a crash that it becomes very important.

Hi JohmJohn Waterson wrote:Can someone give us the contact details of the supplier. When I last priced at Placo and Festfire, I was quoted around R600 for a 1kg BFC Halon.
If it is not one of the 2 legit sellers in the country. Send by email to info@savannahac.co.za.
Thanks
John

Re: Fire extinguishers
OK - Ian finally got stock.
1kg = R280 ex VAT (or R250 ex VAT without the vehicle mounting bracket).
Delivery to Pretoria is free.
Could anybody who still wants, please reply to this post ASAP?
Thanks,
Justin

Re: Fire extinguishers
Hi Justin,
If these are genuine 1 kg Halon extinguishers, I am still in for two.
Do you know how much the vehicle brackets are? need to mount them somehow....
Cheers, T4Flyer.

Re: Fire extinguishers
Yup, 1kg Halon. Haven't bought from them myself, but there are a couple of satisfied customers on Avcom.
Not sure about the bracket, but as noted, it adds R30(ex VAT) to the price. I think the vehicle brackets have a standard bolt pattern, as the Builder's Warehouse special that I bought bolted straight onto the studs in my LandCruiser.

Re: Fire extinguishers
Hi All. Those interested in these extinguishers are spending good money after bad. Halon extinguishers have been banned see below:-
Fire extinguishers using Halon, usually coloured green, must have
been safely disposed of by December 2003. They must not be
discharged into the atmosphere but returned to Chubb, who will
arrange authorised disposal.
I too am disapointed to finally find a reasonable priced extinguisher, only to find that this halon stuff is very unfriendly to the atmosphere and has been banned.
Just a warning to prevent additional expense later.

Re: Fire extinguishers
It is still allowed for aviation use (in fact, it is still required by legislation for aviation use). It is bad for the atmosphere, and it is no longer manufactured. All cylinders currently sold are recycled gas returned (as above) 'for authorised disposal'.Tiff1 wrote:Hi All. Those interested in these extinguishers are spending good money after bad. Do not use a dry powder or chemical extinguisher in a closed cockpit aircraft - the fire extinguisher will likely kill you faster than the fire. Which is why halon is still allowed (and required) for aviation use.
