Magni Gyro Rigging
Hi all Magni owners. I have managed to find a way, without modifying anything or changing any engine or prop specs, to increase the speed of the Magni M16 and M22 from 5-15mph. The job does take some time (a few hours) as I need to establish the parameters of each Magni I do, and then again after the job is done. I have done 7 so far and each one has had improved performance. There is a definite fuel saving and a higher cruise speed.

Eric did a full 500 hour overhaul on my Magni M16 and the change in performance and handling was dramatic. Eric has the equipment to balance the carbs, set the rotor tracking, balance the prop and align the engine correctly with the airframe. I am sure thatI have at least a ten Mph gain in speed at 5000 rpm. My stick shake is zero and the plane feels like new. I can really recommend this service.

How do you set the tracking on a Magni Rotor ?

The rotor head does have a tracking adjustment, which is achieved by moving the entire rotor assembly left and right relative to the spindle axis with the rotor fore and aft.

Please don’t take offence, I am just trying to understand.
I don’t think that moving the head can be classified as tracking.
Tracking is when the lead and lag of your rotors are not in sync and this will lead to a bump with the rotation of the rotor.
Not sure what is achieve by moving the rotor head, can you explain ?

I was hoping that you weren't going to ask as it gets a bit difficult to explain and visualise.
If you imagine the rotor at 90 degrees to the direction of flight, if you move it forward or backwards with respect to the axis of rotation you change the angle of attack of the advancing blade differently to the change in angle of attack of the other blade once it has rotated around to become the advancing blade. This corrects any difference in tracking, which is the tip of the two blades not following exactly the same path, one being higher or lower than the other at a given point on the circumference of the disc.

mmmm Please don't take offence if I say / ask something. The way I understood it after reading up and asking lots of questions is that you actually change the centre of rotation ( aerodynamic and mass ) if you perform the change you talk about. Agree, it does have an effect on tracking as well. When I get time to hang out at Wagtail Johan always explains teh "rotor balance art" as a long tedious process because teh action and reactions are all interdependant. By making one change you can have positive effect on say tracking and negative effect on centre of rotation. Sometimes the net effect is still a bit better and then you have a smoother ride. Al I know is all in all it is a time consuming process and unless you have very specialized equipment you just play in the dark and if you are lucky you might be able to improve a really bad rotor.

I use lights to track the rotors. That is all I am prepared to say as the method is something I have developed locally and it works very well.

I have just last week completed another rigging job and the difference was about 8mph faster than before at the same power setting. The system works. In case people are confused as to what it entails, it has nothing to do with the rotors.

On the 03 Jan 2008 you have posted about the ELA rotor inspection. The Magni guys were very sensitive about the tracking of the rotor.
Tracking was a swear word to them and they defended it by saying that other gyro’s uses old technology and that tracking is done at the factory for the Magni.
Thus the reason for starting my post by” please don’t take offence”
As for the ELA’s rotor inspection :
This will only happen at 1500 hours with the new rotor head.
My head was exchange for the newer version on 190 hours and is the smoothes gyro that I have flown. I have now 270 hours on the ELA.
I don’t know what is the speed issue. On a 40 hour trip with Magni’s , MT03, and Ela’s we were all flying together. The only difference was that my manifold pressure on the Ela was 2 inches below the others maintaining the same speed.
And after a year and a halve they are admitting now that there was a problem with the Magni’s tracking and if the concept works, great.

From experience I tread carefully with subjects about Magni’s rotors.

A post was made about Magni’s blade tracking where I raised questions because :
1) I have owned a Magni and at that stage it was impossible
2) There was a big hoa hah a year ago about the Magni and other rotors and rotor heads
3) I don’t know why speed is an issue as we have flown 40 hours, 4x m22 , 1x MT03 sport , 2x MT 03 and an ELA. NO MATERIAL DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE SPEED OF THE DIFFERENT GYROS.
4) I have connected the post form gyrofan in Jan 08 with the current post. Both posts have to do with rotors.
Tell me what portion of the post is childish ?
What is irrelevant ?
Where don’t I contribute to the forum ?
