Re: Starting with training
It is amazing how lekker it is to put misconceptions aside. It's a bummer to be up there and
there is this little thing nagging in the background.
Thank you for all the input.

Re: Starting with training
Hi everyone & Low level
Well, today was the day we got going with training. Johnny did the take off and landing and not much in between.
I remmembered the first flights with training in a trike, training seem much the same with a big differance. Now we're cruising!!
We did some straight and level flight, followed some grondpaaitjies, a good couple of turns, a 360, low and lower flight. Now I know more than ever before when this training is over, we'll be going places.
Ok, today was more a case of getting used to the feeling and handling of the gyro. Can't wait for the next lesson.
Take care

Well done Pierre. Pretty sure all the misconceptions of gyros that was still in your head will fly out the door now.
What gyro (reg) you're training on ?

Thanks Low Level
We are waiting for the red gyro that's being modified for training, at the moment ZU-TMA is being used.
Pierre
No doubt about that.Low Level wrote:Pretty sure all the misconceptions of gyros that was still in your head will fly out the door now

Re: Starting with training
Hi everyone
I am sure the veteran GPL pilots doesn't want to know what todays training was about, simply because they can do it aleady.
We did a pre-flight briefing on the following exercises, and safety precautions involved.
First we did the rudder, yaw then roll follows, and bank then yaw follows.
We did some side slipping to lose height on purpose. Interresting action! Left rudder and right stick or vice versa, while keeping your direction.
Second, lining up 90° with a road or border, after a 180° turn, left and right hand turns, while not losing or gaining height. It was amazing
to feel the differance on the stick between left and right turns, because of the rotor's turning direction.
Then later, what Johnny called humpti dumpti, (pilot induced oscilation I think it's called). Off the power, stick gently forward, gain speed
in the decent up to 90 mph, stick back gently, and throttle in the climb to gain height while keeping momentum.
Johnny corrected me a couple of times, I tend to push left rudder unknowingly during straight and level flight.
We did 2 cicuits, low fly by, under my control, and Johnny did the full stop landing. He made it look like a piece of cake.
This is an absolutly fantastic machine. Today was great fun. Thanx Johnny.

Re: Starting with training
I thought of reporting all the lessons we are going through, but can't keep up with it.
It is amazing how a person almost become one with the machine, after only 5 hours of training, (which was incredible) I understand
why gyronaught's are addicted to flying and fortunatly, like Johhny says there is no rehab for this addiction!!

Re: Starting with training
Friday 4 Sept'09, late afernoon while training, we had a westerly wind at KH. Just afer landing, started rolling again doing touch and goes, the wind turned. My first experiece
with flying behind the power curve. Fortunatly Johnny knew what to do, turbo was the answer. I was amazed at the low speed the gyro got airborne, about 45mph, and then this
change of wind could certainly screw a flight
!
We have to be alert to changing conditions and expect the un-expected. I got so used to the easy way the gyro take off, and would never thought it could happen.
I'm just a rookie in training and realized, same with microlights and suppose any flying machine, pilots have to be alert

Re: Starting with training
Hi all Pilots & non Pilots
Remembering the last couple of hour of training, unbelievable!!!
We,ve been doing emergency landings, power out after take off, the gyro is amazing
To high for a emergency landing, no problem, side slip or hover, when the picture is right, nose down and land. As easy as that!!!
Johnny always say "fly the picture on landing, height, airspeer and rate of decent not less than 4º", keep the nose on the line. Anyone can do it perfectly every time.
With in ground effect, roll out, keep the gyro flouting, wait for the main wheels to touch, power of, keep the stick back & keep front wheel from touching until it puts itself down.
Now, just thinking about it, let's get airborne!!!
Power out, just after take off, no problem. Nose down, (stick forward).... float, touch...then it's a normal landing.
Why didn't I wake up sooner, hundreds of lekke flying hours gone
We will explore this country and meet all the gyro addicts, very soon.
(we = wife & myself) Math formula for the uninformed.

Am glad you are enjoying your training on gyro's.
That's why I tell everyone that gyro's are aviation's best kept secret!

Re: Starting with training
Sorry to chip in but I have been following the feedback on the RAF 2000 which really apeals to me.
I fly a Aquilla 2 with a 582 but I use it for Anti Poaching and the weather becomes a mission flying far and during the heat of the day. I have never even flown in a Gyro so am as dumb as two bricks on the subject.
What I need is an aircraft I can get in fly 150nm, land refuel and take off again to count Rhino and look for poachers should that be the situation on the ground. This can not be done with a Trike and time is always the problem in being able to attend to the situation as quick as possible. Trying to do this using a Robb 22 or 44 is not cost effective.
Please can some one put me in touch with an instructor or where I can pay for an introduction flight on the RAF 2000.
I like the looks and the fact that it has a 165hp motor pushing the aircraft.
Flying here in the Waterberg mountains leaves no room for error and does anyone fly a Gyro around Ellisras area.
Any comments would be most appreciated.
Thank you.
Simon.
