Few (6) from Wintervogel interested to go but weather and wind for those mountains, will decide closer to the time.

Re: Overberg FLy in and Airshow, 13-15 Nov
Yeah we are definitely going, weather dependent of course. However a bigger plan is for the girls to drive through on Sat morning and we'll spend Saturday and Sunday in Arniston, at the Campsite. They have nice Chalets there. So even if it turns we will prob still go
Be aware that no flying in will be allowed on Saturday. You have to arrive on Friday and depart Sunday. There is a very limited window on Sat morning before 9am, but you have to get special permission to arrive during that time.
Camp under the wing of your aircraft.
It appears that only PIC needs register and pay the bucks, the PAX is free It is advisable to register before hand so they can expect you
A word of warning, it get's very very hot there and if you arrive on Friday, and it is busy the ATC will position you somewhere south of the field, holding at 500ftAGL. As a result it can be very turbulent. Have a map with you so you can follow his instructions carefully. If he puts you on hold over Arniston, you will need to know where that is
Frequencies in use (make sure your radio is pre-programmed for use)
APPROACH CONTROL 119.80Mhz, CALL SIGN – “OVERBERG APPROACH” - When you enter the FAR147 airspace
AERODROME CONTROL 121.20Mhz, CALL SIGN – “OVERBERG TOWER” When joining for landing
GROUND CONTROL 121.75Mhz, CALL SIGN – “OVERBERG GROUND” On the ground, taxiing instructions
Also NOTE: you may not start your plane up without first calling ground for startup and then taxi instructions
For those who have never been under instruction of the ATC do the following. Remember not to rush, speak slowly and clearly. If you are not sure of instructions request "Say Again QNH" for example
initial contact entering the airspace
ZU-ABC - "Overberg Approach, Zulu Uniform Alpha Bravo Charley, good morning/afternoon"
now wait for a response.
OA - "Alpha Bravo Charley - go ahead"
ABC - "Overberg Approach, Microlight Alpha Bravo Charley, 1(2) onboard, overhead Caledon at 1500ft, request routing instructions for Overberg"
OA - "Alpha Bravo Charley, QNH 1019, decend to and Maintain 500ftAGL, route for Bredarsdorp, report abeam Napier"
ABC - "Alpha Bravo Charley, QNH 1019, Maintain 500ft AGL, Route Bredarsdorp, report abeam Napier"
Later
ABC - "Overberg Approach, Alpha Bravo Charley, abeam Napier"
OA - "Alpha Bravo Charley, Change Frequency 121decimal20, contact tower for Landing instructions."
ABC - "Overberg Approach, Alpha Bravo Charley, changing frequency 121decimal20, contacting tower for landing"
121.20
ABC - ""Overberg Tower, Zulu Uniform Alpha Bravo Charley, good morning/afternoon"
OT - "Alpha Bravo Charley - go ahead"
ABC - ""Overberg Tower, Alpha Bravo Charley, Abeam Napier, 500ft, request landing instructions"
OT - "Alpha Bravo Charley, route Overberg, climb to 1500ft, report field in sight"
ABC - "Route Overberg, climb and maintain 1500ft, report Field in sight"
Later when field in sight
ABC - "Overberg Tower, Alpha Bravo Charley, field in sight"
OT - "Alpha Bravo Charley, join Left hand downwind, runway 28, number 2 behind Cessna, report final"
ABC - "Lefthand downwind, runway 28, number two, other traffic in sight, report final, Alpha Bravo Charley"
When on final
ABC - "Overberg Tower, Alpha Bravo Charley, on final, runway 28"
OT - " Alpha Bravo Charley, cleared to land, Exit first left, report Overberg Ground on 121decimal75 for taxi instuctions"
ABC - "Exit first left, report Overberg Ground 121decimal75, Alpha Bravo Charley"
Once landed and exited the runway, 121.75
ABC - "Overberg ground, Alpha Bravo Charley, requesting taxi instructions"
OG - " Alpha Bravo Charley, follow Marshal to parking area........."
They normally have guys on Quads to show you the way.
Once you have been led to the area, shut your plane down on the taxi way on instruction from the marshals. Do not use power to park. Rather push it in. Remember your tie down ropes, they usually have a cable that you can tie on to.
Pilots have to report to the reception with a valid Pilot's license and your money
Now they usually do not like gaggle's to approach the field for landing, you have to seperate yourselves into individual aircraft.
If there is a strong crosswind blowing and you are nervous, you can tell the ATC that you "Cannot Comply" and request a different runway favouring the current wind conditions, especially trikes. The runways are immense.
34°33'50.22"S, 20°14'32.86"E
Familiarize yourself with the layout on Google Earth, see you there
If it is busy land deep to get closer to the taxiway. 28 for example has it's first exit 1.2km down the runway, that's a long way to taxi, especially if there are other big boys in circuit
The ATC also can tell you to shorten your downwind and expedite, i.e. turn you onto base early and land deep, if he wants to get you out of the way.

Agree. They are exremely helpfull and understand the problems we have in a heavy crosswind.Been placed in that position and they gave me another runway. And also land deep close to the taxiway. A Hawker Seafury idling waiting for take-off burns a lot of fuel while the miggies taxi along the runway.tell the ATC that you "Cannot Comply" and request a different runway favouring the current wind conditions

I sometimes get confused............But i'm not sure

Re: Overberg FLy in and Airshow, 13-15 Nov
Hi Guys, just to let you know I would NOT go, even if you paid me... I sent this email to the organisers, and received the following response:
The Flying Organiser,
I Have just finished reading the conditions of flying in to Overberg, on the 14th of November.
Well I am afraid you guys have missed the ball completely. The last flying was a nightmare for us pilots, we had to register and pay landing and parking fees, and that after standing in a queue for at least an hour. I see that this year you are charging a R200.00 registration fee! What is the world comming to? If you want aeroplanes there, and I am sure that without all the general aviation planes there, you will be doing the public a disservice, then why charge for the pilots to fly in?
I see also that you have to be there by Friday, due to " the high intensity of air arrivals previously experienced within a short period of time prior to the Air Show commencing "
This is a joke, have any of you ever been to Oshkosh, I have been three times, there are arrivals and departures all the time, last time I was there, there were 12000 aircraft on the field! What high intensity? I distinctly remember the ATC telling all of us in the circuit to land at our own discretion, as he cold not cope, and that with maybe a 100 aircraft, in total at the field!
Tempting a pilot with a 'Goody Bag' , is, far as I am concerned, an insult to our intelligence, and to even mention this in the briefing is just silly, and shows a lack of prefessionalism. Are the public, going to be paying R200.00 for entrance? I should think not, and yet you have the ordasidy to charge pilots, that help make the show, this amount! To quote your own website: "Because this is not purely a military event, we as an air show committe will rely heavily on civilian participation to make the event a resounding success once again" So why charge, we are already speding money, out of our own pockets, to be there, and to make the show a success.
I await your earliest response.

This is the Response, I received:
Good Morning Sir,
As per your request, herewith our earliest as possible response.
Thank you for your valued comments.
We hope you have a wonderful day.

I can't you didn't spell prefesionalism correctly!!
I thought I could fly in the sat morning and be there before 09h00. But alas, with the weather so crap and uncertain as it is, I can't even think of going the friday. So, unfortunately I will not be there.
Maybe they need a proper PR manager!

Recreation flying and public orientated airshows do not mix anyway.
