Hoop jy kom gou weer op jou voete

groete

Dankie Paul
Ons reel binnekort weer so iets.

Hi All....

Well as you have previously read, I did not make it to Blie max's place at Elands, two major reasons for this...and the events leading up to the second reason follows:

Anyway, as some of you might have read in some of my previous posts I have of recent had a few issues with my trike. The trike I fly is to say the least not the newest and best on the market, but it gives me my fi and I love it. I fly an old Cosmos Chronos trike cart with a raptor wing and a rotax 503 engine. Let me tell you I have had a few problems, with Prop, then carbs etc...

This I had all sorted and she was purring like a kitten...idle at 2010rpm and hands off cruise at 49mph...very happy....

So friday comes along and I decide to go and prep the aircraft for the weekends adventure (^^) Fuel the trike load up extra fuel, do the preflights, start her up to make sure battery is ok and engine is smooth...thumbs up and we are ready...

Saturday morning 04:30 arrives, Weather forecast says partly cloudy with low winds, all is looking good...I climb in the car and head towards Kliprivier...which is an hour away for me. I get to klip, wheel the aircraft out and warm up. Oom Paul sends sms and lets me know weather is closed in a bit but I should speak to Swannie at springs and ask him their plans. The weather north east of me looks bad, so I phone Swannie and he says to me it is patchy and they are goign to wait a while before they take off.

I reckon that is ok, I got up at 4:30 to start this and will not let it be done in vain, so I decide to take off. Airborne at 6:25 a little late but I climb to 7000ft above the mist and some cloud...and then tail wind heaven wooohooo...I get a tailwind that pushes me along at 58mph hands off...and smooth as a babys bottom...I start thinking this is going to be worth it all...

My flight is going well, first planned stop is bapsfontein, so I carry on, past springs just over the N12 and what do I see...nothing but cloud (See Pic) looking around I do not even see a hole for me to get through. I am concerned now as I need to top up fuel for the final leg to Oom Paul. I try to get under but no luck so I climb to 7200 above the cloud. GPS reads I am 2 miles out from Bapsfontein and no holes in the cloud cover, so I decide to go through to get under it. I decide to keep my eyes on the GPS to see if I am changing direction or turning off track to make sure my orientation in the cloud does not go crazy...after about a decent of 650ft I start seeing the ground...I am through...hear beating like crazy, but safe and see bapsfontein and I join on finals for 02....

Once safely on the ground at Bapsfontein I decide to call Oom Paul and ask how things are looking. He says to me the cloud cover is still quite heavy but clearing up and he suggests I fly to Rhino and he will give me an update. This I do. I do all the radio calls and get various pilots answering my calls and hear all the comms going on. My trike is flying sweetly and have no problems...so on to Rhino Park I go. About 4 miles out of Rhino I change to their frequency and to my calls and join the circuit, number 3 on finals for 09, the new tar runway...very nice I might add... So I land.

At the parking area, I decide to refuel as I did not at bapsfontein and sms Oom Paul...he says to me the weather is breaking up and I should try and make it through. I decide I am going to give it a go as the clouds were lifting at Rhino. Start up and do a a call before I start to taxi, but something does not sound right when I push the PTT, I hear all the pilots taxiing and in the circuit, so I decide to ask for a radio check..."Rhino tarffic, Microlight Alpha Alpha Sierra, request Radio check?"...then...dead silence...I shut down the engine and do the call again....no luck, I even opened the intercom (buzzcom system) and find nothing out of place...Just my luck...but what do i do. I sms Oom Paul and let him know my situation...he says I should fly anyway as he would fly back with me on sunday and do all the radio work...sounds like an option to me, but I decided against it as I knew there was a fair amount of traffic en route to ermelo for the airshow there and I still had about 50 odd miles to Oom Pauls place...so I decided to head back to Bapsfontein to see if Larry Eschner was there to help...he was not, so I smsed Oom Paul and said I would not make and decided to head back to Klip...safer option for me...needless to say I still did all the calls as though my system was working, however I could still receive and kept a lookout for traffic...

So, Oom Paul, thank you once again for your hospitality, although I did not make it and I must apologise as I really looked forward to the weekend. Next time it will happen.
Below is a picture I took from the video camera about 5 mins out of Bapsfontein on saturday morning. Clouds are really dangerous if you do not have the correct instrumentation. ## ##

Hi All

I have done a few Awesome things with my Trike........like go to 14700 Ft last year. the cables and tubes seem to shrink as you go higher  Then I flew cross country onto Inhaka Islands from Springs, I also did a speed run to louwsburg Natal and back to spring ..same day. ($$) ($$) ($$)

BUT BOY OOHHH BOY did I enjoy this canyon flying ...... I am not regularly left speechless ..... I was stunned ...... it was fantabulous vhpy vhpy vhpy

Thanks for the invite (BIG MAN) and your name will feature in my flight log as one of the ICONS as the first person to show me "canyon flying. (^^)
everyone should do this at some point........ it makes you humble :!:

Blue MAX Breakfast includes "Steak Tjops Wors Mielie pap and Chakalaka" another first for me (great stuff) Thanks Blue Max
