Hi Jaco
Great project and thanks for the updates.
Would a 1.6 / 1.4 diesel engine work with a direct drive ?
The diesel engines have in the region of 200 – 220 N/m at 1700 rpm and produce up to 80 hp.
We have locally the Ford 1.6 diesel and overseas the Mini ,Peugeot and Toyota are running the same 1.4 diesel engine and it weights 100 kg.
Apologies for the hijack

Re: TOYOTA YARIS ENGINE
Off the top of my head I can't see any reason why it wont work. As long as you limit the revs
to keep the prop tip speed for your cruise rpm at or below 700 feet per second or 475 mph and
weight is not too much for the aircraft CG, it should be possible. There is a Toyota Diesel Flying
in the Cape at this stage.
Cheers.

Re: TOYOTA YARIS ENGINE
t-bird are you directing your question regarding the diesel engines at me or at Jaco who is building a Toyota 1nz engine into a trike, his project is looking great ,and very affordable.
To tell you the truth i haven’t considered these small capacity diesel engines for a number of reasons,so I have not done a lot of research about their power and torque curves. But from experience most modern turbo diesels will run happily at 75 %load at 2500-3200 rpm so direct drive should be possible with the correct prop
Power to weight ratio is also a concern as I doubt that you would be able to bolt the prop directly to the crankshaft (axial and radial loads ect) so some type of extension housing with a carrier bearing will have to be used
To isolate engine vibrations from the air frame could also prove tricky ,there has been a big improvement with common rail diesel engines but they do not run as smooth as petrol engines
Due to the nature of my work ( Automotive engineering machine shop)I get to see a lot of engine failures most due to operator negligence not ad hearing to a service regime and some related to design problems . Abnormal combustion and over fuelling in tier2 and tier3 direct injection engines are normally fuel quality related
Electronic injectors and cracked piston crowns are not cheap to repair
Another practical consideration with inline 4cyl engines with direct drive ,depending on the application is the position of the thrust line on pusher applications this should not be a problem
There are a lot of positive aspects to diesel power who knows if the yaris project reaches a satisfactory conclusion I might be tempted to take up such a venture

Re: TOYOTA YARIS ENGINE
Hi Diesel dog and Jaco
Thanks for the info. I have a gyro project that needs an engine.
914 is too expensive and uses 23/25 liters an hour.
The torque on the toyota/mini 1.4 diesel is double the 914 and weigh almost the same.
A diesel gyro would be the ultimate flying machine, but extennding the crankshaft would be a problem.
Subaru have a diesel but it is very heavy

My eyes are starting to deceive me ,put on some contrasting colour to make finding the low spots easier.

So when I landed I scrutinised the Jabi with my eyes closed, ripe watermelon for sure ,
Are my expectations un realistic for a hand made composite cowl.
The plug is now ready for spray filler
If I remember correctly from art history the impressionist movement believed to make bold brush strokes and not to rework your creation to much.
