Microlighters

Have started a new thread with the proposed flying planned by any gyronaught (or any aviator for that matter, all are most welcome), for the weekend ahead in the Cape.

If anyone is going somewhere, feel free to upload any attachments of the proposed route eg. Easyplan, jpg file, etc, giving a central point where we can all meet. Careful consideration for the weather must also be taken, so that the weekend flights are done for enjoyment, and not because we have to do it.

Please all confirm latest by the evening before, on the forum, if you are in, so that we know who to expect.

Looking forward to many beautiful flights in this part of the country...

Just to kick things off, I landed at a strip marked "CRAIGC" on my GPS or "CraigCor" on Easyplan (10nm North of Wellington on the R44). Not a bad tar strip.

I assume it's microlight/gyro friendly?

Did you fly your MT down, or did you trailer it. If you have flown, what was the route, and how long did you fly ?

I managed to time my flying down to the Cape to coincide with the SAGPA AGM in the Cape this year in October. I flew 7 hrs to Carnavon stopping at least 4 times (Kimberley was one of them), and then another 6 hours to Stellenbosch on the 2nd day. We routed via Calvinia, Vredendal and Saldanha which made for some very beautiful flying.

After 13 hours flying, I must admit I was very tired. It's a bit long for me, but lots of fun.

Is there a wire across the end of the runway or has it been dropped?

I did a precautionary approach before landing there, and the wire has been dropped. You can come in nice and low right over the gate at the end of the runway.

I assume they are microlight/gyro friendly are they?

Magnifan, I suppose there aren't many places around here in the Cape where you can land and get something to eat?

Thanks for the response, but my trip has been cancelled, I'm battling with a
shoulder that's been full off pain for the last week, I've only been discharged from
hospital last night,next time I will take up your offer.Have a nice Christmas and
enjoy flying in the Cape.

Thanks for the update on the airstrip, I haven't landed ther, so I don't know how gyro friendly they are. Sadly there arn't too many places where one can land and find a meal around here. I am told that there is a small game lodge on the West Coast near Ysterfontein that serves meals, but again I haven't landed there. It is called Buffelsfontein if I recall correctly. There is also rumoured to be a bed and breakfast on the coast just before Elandsbaai that serves meals, and where one can stay over, but again I havn't been there.

I did once land at Misverstand dam, which is on Easyplan, and walked to the restuarant there for breakfast. It is a bit of a walk, but if you buzz the establishment on the West of the dam they sometmes send a bakkie out to collect you.

I am desperately trying to clear my desk before going on leave on Friday, and have't had a chance to fly for a fortnight now. Perhaps we can do some flying in the new year.

Jonathan, thanks for the info.

When I was in Jnb, we got a bit spoilt with quite a few places to fly into to have something to eat. Pity, more of the wine farms don't have more strips on, with a restaurant right next to it...Guess the Cape makes up for it with its beauty.

Would be great to meet up sometime, and you can show me more of the Cape.

Basically a nice straight gravel road in the nature reserve - land and taxi to restaurant. Owners are very fly-in friendly and welcoming. Nice breakfast fly-in spot. Buffelsfontein is located on the eastern side of the R27 "West Coast road" near Yzerfontein.

Right ho, I'm finished packing and ready for an early morning take-off tomorrow to Arniston for a few weeks of R&R and some scenic coastal flying. Safe flying everyone!
