Who says a Gyro can't hover or fly backwards?

Pretty impressive and it looked very stable as well. What kind of head wind do you think he had to be able to do that?

Not sure of headwind, mayb the Gyronauts can assist here. Would have been interesting to see what happens if the wind stopped.

one-up and half tanks at 500ft amsl I fly straight and level at 30mph easily. That means that a 30mph IAS will result in a hover. Any more and you will be able to fly backwards too.

Happens quite often (here in the Cape) that I am able to maintain a hover for as long as I like. In fact, over Ceres mountains once I was showing an IAS of 85mph and a ground speed of 20mph. Could fly backwards at 35mph in that but I confess I got outta there ASAP.

A mother of a head wind for sure.

why can gyros fly in such strong conditions?

Must be the high loading on the disc - compare blade size with aircraft wing size. A high wing loading is always preferred in turbulant conditions.

I posted a link here a while back about this russian gyro pilot, he was doing the sideways stuff an all without a wind and a homebuild nogal...ex military pilot. Was BEST gyro vid I've seen
