Gyro project - Advice needed

Hello aviators..
I'm currently looking at acquiring a partly built Sycamore Mk1 Gyroplane, as a project to complete myself.
I have walked the terribly restrictive road with the CAA on a previous occasion w.r.t a type certified aircraft and ended up loosing huge financially because of my own haste in making a purchase.
Learning from this I need to ask the wise, experienced and educated individuals of this forum for some advise, before sticking my head into another possible hornets nest.
What should I look out for when looking at a project like this. This being a ZU type experimental aircraft that has been half build bar the motor and a few odds and ends.
Do I need a build number from the CAA?
What paperwork should I get with the aircraft in order to continue the build?
What sort of extra costs can I expect for things like air worthiness and test flights etc?
And any other info you might deem necessary would be greatly appreciated.
The aircraft has apparently been registered before as ZU-JSB, not sure why it's no longer registered.
Kind regards,
Mynard..
