This might not be the forum for this discussion but I am sure it would be of interest for every aviation ethusiast. Last Sunday the sound barrier was broken by a non powered human during a free fall from 130 000 ft reaching a speed of 1342 km/hr (834 mph). Felix Baumgartner I salute you for this extremly brave deed which I dont think many of us will dare do! Cosidering the exposure Red Bull got with over 8 mil watching direct and 90 mil already watched the video there are talk of over $ 1 000 000 marketing value for Red Bull and that is no bull....! Wonder what Felix got out of the deal?

That is not my point. Not many of you reading this will be aware of the fact that Chuck Yeager (89 Yrs young) broke the sound barrier exactly 65 year earlier (1947) within the hour of Felix attemp! Co-incedence? What makes last Sunday even more unique is the fact that Chuck Yeager was taken up in a F-15 Eagle and broke the sound barrier again 65 years later within the hour of his 65 year old record and within the hour of Felix attempt!!! This happening at the same place as 65 years ago and 700 miles from were Felix landed!!! This is what I call COOL!!!!! (^^) One off Chucks sayings are;"I will keep on doing what I can do for as long as I can and then I will keep on doing the next best thing for as long as I can and then .....!! Do yourself a favour and read his autbiography and you will see Felix is in the same class as he when it comes to bravory!

Bringing me to the point that connects us gyro pilots to the above. Not one of us has not asked himself / herself why am I doing this? The answer is we are all adrinaline junkies and if we were asked to do the above I think most of us would have considered. By flying a gyro at least our rotor tips reaches close to 1000 km/hr and that is the closes I or most of us will ever get to the sound barrier!!

Miskien moet ek olie op sy rotors sit dan sny hy gladder deur die lug en dan is die klank grens in sig!

lol, hier is so bietjie inligting,

as jy die RAF se blades vat , en jy kry hulle tot 400rpm of altitude can 5500f teen 28 grade C dag, sal die tip spoed so 428mph wees , die klank grens vir daai spesifieke dag sal wees rondom 778. so om die klankgrens te breek sal jy nodig he om die rotor op te spin na amper 700 rpm. dit is nou as my somme reg is.

so Malcolm jou kanse is maar skraal. (**)
