Cape Town coastal flying video...

Last Friday I called Learjet at his office and he sounded a little stressed. I reminded him that Friday = Flyday and de-stressing was required. We departed Morningstar at 16h00 and flew north to Yzerfontein routing low level through the Atlantis Dunes on the way. Just past Yzerfontein we turned and flew back down the coast towards Cape Town, most of it at low-level skimming the beaches and waves. It was a beautiful wind free evening and the sunset light was awesome. I used the opportunity to try my hand at a 2nd gyro flying video attempt, and this time added a nose camera to the gyro. The flight was magical and we arrived back in high spirits.

I have not changed anything materially from the first attempt, but the addition of the nose cam makes a big difference to the finished product. All that's lacking now is a view of the pilot/passenger. I am not a video-editing guru and for some reason this time the final clip can only be exported at a slightly lower resolution than my first clip, and this shows in the form of some horizontal banding in some sections, but all in all I'm happy with the attempt. The hardest part of the whole thing is finding suitable music to go with the footage! Being a tone-deaf musical throw-back doesn't help... Anyhow here it is:

Let me know what you think... All suggestions for improvement most appreciated!

Jean.

Here's a brief attempt at a quick gyro video flying over the Ceres mountains. I'm using a Contour HD video cam, mounted on my helmet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faSTUXy6MP4

I think the big trick with video is to get the video stabilised as much as possible, which is not that easy when it's sitting on one's kop. The Contour HD doesn't have a remote switch for turning it on and off if I mount it elsewhere.

I noticed Gyro videos on Youtube with unbelievable stable pictures, the pilots mentioned in their comments that they used stabilisation software in the editing process - anyone used this before?

Wish we had this sort of thing way back when we did the "Fly the beloved country" doccie. All I had was a cameraman with a huge betacam SP seated behind me and without a screen to stop the bugs from clogging up his nostrels ! Way to go Jean! Well done. ##
