Grand Central

Does anyone know if I will be allowed to land at Grand Central in a gyro? I thought you might need a transponder but can't find confirmation of this on the net.

Don't need a transponder for FAGC. Maybe give the tower a call.

Thank you, Everyone, for the info. If I have problems on the day I'll just say it's an emergency... (-) Don't know what excuse I'll use the next day? (Hee hee)

Tinkerbell, I've landed there numerous times in a gyro. No problem. They still don't allow microlights, but a gyro is definitely not classed as a microlight. Always remember that.

As per the other thread, they should bill you as though you are a rotorcraft, and not a fixed wing.

....or as in my case Glenn, I parked in the wrong spot overnight and was billed R20.00 per hour. Bill came to over R600!!! I paid on the spot only to get a further invoice for another R65 two months later.
Airport manageress was most unobliging and unfriendly, but I can certainly vouch for ATC's they are most helpful and friendly.

You are not the only one that has experienced this. They seem to forget they are there to offer a service. As you say, at least the ATC's are friendly.

In fact, often I used to contact them, and ask them for low level routing over the field (if wanting to take a short cut). They often obliged, and I would wave at them as I went past the tower.

I operate from Summit and contact Grand Central for each take off and landing.

Never had a problem with them . I have to complement the ATC as they are very efficient and friendly.

I have landed a few times at Grand Central to pick up passengers. No problem at all.

They have also routed me low level to save time

Regards

Callie

I agree with all the positive comments re ATC's @ Grand Central. Every time I've contacted them when using the Pinedene exit route they have been professional and friendly!

On Monday it was so misty that I had to go to work the traditional way - by car, but in stead of the usual 75 min, I was there in 30! Thank goodness for holiday traffic. Tuesday was more of the same due to supposed thunderstorms. Well, I am still waiting for them...
Finally, I flew into Grand Central this morning. Waterkloof first gave me a scare saying that GC has advised him I am not allowed to land. At least I was in the air even if I had to turn around. After a bit of a discussion he said I should speak to GC. No problems there, GC never refused my landing, it was Waterkloof acting a bit discombobulated. Went up the tower to say hello and met Annemarie, nice girl. Lots of stairs, next time I'll just phone (he he).
Going back just now ^
Nothing better than flying!
Happy 2009!! vhpy
