Hi everyone,

How do I turn the gearbox upside down on my Rotax 582? Do I need to open it up first and do I need new gaskets before doing so? Anything else I should be careful & aware of?

Hi Hennie, contact Andre at Petit. He will be able to assist and advise. He will give you the best advise and technical service at the most reasonable price. When it comes to fiddling with the gearbox you need specialised tools. He just recently dismantled my engine and gearbox and I am most happy with his service and I feel safe while I fly.

Hi Henni,
i would think that your AP should sign off a job like this and it might be better for him just to do the job.

It's for my modified KR2 project. So I don't think it matters all that much as everything needs to be inspected & signed off in the end.

Henni I think what Trevor and the other guys are saying has merit, here is why. Some years ago I bought a 582 engine that was in a Gyro that had a forced landing. Apparently the prop did not develop thrust, but was turning, at full power.After the landing the engine was removed and inspected, with nothing the matter. To install the engine in the Bushbaby I had to turn the gearbox around, it was then that I discovered the answer to the problem, the bottom gear of the gearbox that fits onto the cranck has a bolt pulling it onto the taper of the cranck, this bolt was not loose, but not properly torqued. This caused slip of the gear which resulted in the above scenario. So with this longwinded story I want to say, at least have your AP stand by and observe when this job is done, for your safety and that of your passenger.

Okay, I'll pay someone then to do this mod for me. Either that, or I'll adapt the mount so as to mount the engine in the upright position instead. After all, the cowling of the Cheetah looks rather stunning.

Whilst I'm at it, am I allowed to use M8 (I think that's what it's called) bolts, that is those black, hardened machine bolts, in the place of AN bolts for the various parts of the engine mount?

Henni, yes you can use other bolts than the AN stuff...BUT.....use 8.8 tensile bolts and make sure it is engineering grade bolts with rolled thread , not hardware bolts with a cut thread.It must clearly show "8.8" on the head. Also try and get the cadmium plated bolts, yellowish/gold colour. If you can get the batch no: of the bolts, it is normally on the box they come from.
