SKYDAT Ref Counter Problem?

Recently my ref counter has started to malfunction - if I switch off the right magneto, the ref reading falls to 0, but audibly only drops as before. Switching off the left magneto causes a 50rpm fall visibly and audibly. The maximum visible refs I can obtain is about 3000 at full throttle - however this is not a true reading as can be seen from the attached picture, where I fly at 1500ASL straight and level at 50mph and yet only register 3000rpm.

What is wrong? What should I do? Suggestions?

Haven't had exactly the same problem as you but the other day taxied out to check my mags before taking off and discovered I did not have any RPM indication on my GX2 at all. Found a loose wire leading into the black box mounted on the rectifier. I took everything apart and neatened it all up by applying solder and heat shrink to all the ends of the wires to ensure that there were no short circuits. Problem rectified! Will keep an I on it though from now on - not the most robust installation of electronics I have ever seen.

Hope you come right.

HI Gert,

I am only seeing this now...have you solved your problem yet? I also had a RPM problem before (Completely Dead). Cost me a new coil..ouch.

If you get some indication I would check the wiring, if you only get 1/2 the reading it might be a setting on the skydat that changed from 2 cylinder to 4 cylinder engine or something else.

Try to contact Phillip from Amptronic (Skydat) he is very helpfull, I lost his number, but am sure someone here on the forum has it.

Ditto on the wiring not being the most robust in the pod, after I opened my pod I was shocked to see what went on inside it. I do not know if it came like that from the manufucturer, since i got my trike 2nd hand. I redid some of my wiring then.

I want to commend Aviation Engines for superb service. You will recall that I have had some problems with my Skydat system since I bought my Aquilla in July last year. At first, the fuel gauge did not work correctly.

It took months before this was sorted.

Next the ref counter gave some problems, see

and

After some troubleshooting, Niren suggested that it could be the coils, and I purchased these expensive parts - after Trygve installed the new coils, my ref counter was working 100% and Aviation Engines honoured the warrantee and refunded the full amount of the coils, as well as labour.

Well done Niren, Aviation Engines and of course, reliable Rotax.
