Hi Guys,
Need some advice from the experienced guys out there.
What should the oil usage be for the Rotary Valve?
What could cause excessive usage?
Except for the oil usage, what other warning signs of trouble can I look for?
Is it possible for the Rotary Valve lubricating oil, to find it's way into the cooling system (radiator)?
Thanks again!

Re: Rotax 582 Rotary Valve lubricant
Hi Tracer
There should be little or no oil usage. The lubrication is by means of a sealed system the circulates the oil. There are seals on either side of the rotary valve shaft. I had a problem on my aquilla with the seal on the waterpump side, this caused water to seep into the oil turning it a milky blue. If you are using oil it sounds like the seal on the opposite end has gone and oil is seeping into the crankcase.
hope this helps

Hi Sad-ham,
Makes sense what you are saying. I haven't seen any signs of water in the oil, but I guess by draining the oil I will be able to get a clearer picture.
Will it be possible for the oil to get into the radiator? The water in the radiator feels a little oily, but that could be the anti-freeze?
thanks

Re: Rotax 582 Rotary Valve lubricant
The Rotary shaft has 3 seals in total on it - should you lose oil , firstly check the exhaust side for typical oil leak symptons - there is a weep hole (teltale that you have a proble with the small inner seal should you find oil there -
If no leak is present its quite a simple job- the seal on the shaft next to the rotary valve has probable gone hard and you need to replace it - remove the waterpump housing , impeller and the the 4 bolts holding the Rotary valve cover - carefully mark the position of the ratary valve to TDC and remove the valve
Use a special tool / protector and tap out the Rotary valve shaft after firstly removing the circlip behind the rotary valve -
Dissassemble the rotary valve shaft , replce all seals and orings and refit in reverse order - small job +- 1 hour with the right tools , call shhould you need help or special tool s , Alex 0825688635
Big question , how much oil do you use per hour ???

Thanks for the reply Alex.
The engine probably only uses about 2 or 3 ml per hour. But we noticed it, because we need to top-up the reservoir now before every flight.

Tracer,
My 582 uses very little oil, isnt your motor still new? What warranty does it carry? You must have a dicky seal problem.( you havnt flown for so long that the seals have gone hard
