Radio noise at high rpm...

Did the following over the weekend:

1) Charged the radio with the supplied charger. Will do this more often
2) Removed the intercom system and cleaned all the electrical connections
3) Removed and cleaned the sparkplug caps, ie. unscrewed the caps from the lead wires, cleaned the insides and screwed them back on ensuring they made good contact
4) Cleaned the headset jack points
5) Verified that the radio squelch was set to 7

The result of this exercise was awesome........... I was able to fly in perfect silence without any interferance......... heehaa.

The only problem I still have is the red and white radio tower on the Magalies........ I pick up radio stations whenever I fly closer than 2 miles and above 5000feet. Solution.... fly low and try to prevent flying close to the tower.

Hi ZULU, Where must this cap. be connected? before the regulator,,,between the engine and the regulator,,, or after the regulator,,,, like across the battery terminals.Using a 582.

Hi Everyone

I have the same problem on my 582 engine with MGL V6 radio.
Single seater but the intercom is part of the radio and not in use.
Cannot find any capacitor installed anywhere.
Where must this be installed- On the charging side of the battery or ?
The radio is directly connected to the battery as per MGL instructions
Any suggestions

A capacitor of 22,000 uf 25V should be connected between the B+ terminal of the Voltage Regulator and ground as close to the regulator as practical.

I found the one and only person in Swakopmund Nmaibia that work with this stuff.
His question is - must it be exactly 22,000 uf 25V as he can supply me with an 20,000 uf.
He can make some up by soldering units together in series.
Will this be fine

Hi Johny, that should work fine, the 22,000uf is rotaxes recommendation not cast in concrete, voltage can also vary a bit, 25 - 38 is typical.

Re-route the ground wire from the battery directly to the engine block. (IF it has not been done.) Ground the engine to the rest of the plane. Take the radio power directly,( thru a seperate switch and a 2A fuse) from the battery. The comms should now be crystal clear. Works for me, every time.

Some of you have mentioned the red and white mast on the Magalies. I recently had a big fright when the radio made so much noise that I was scrambling to get my handheld. I also unplugged my headsets and replugged, switched on and off, even changed the batteries for the noise reduction, but then suddenly everything was back to normal. We had some problems with distortion recently that was resolved when we moved the aerial further from the headset jacks, and I was worried that something else could be wrong now. But during the whole trip I had no other radio problems until on my return I experienced exactly the same problem in exactly the same spot. I immediately realized that it had to be the tower. The strange thing is that I have gone past the mast before in another aircraft, same type radio, and it didn't happen. I was higher than 5000ft as I was crossing the ridge and closer than 2 miles to the mast. Now that I know other people have experienced the same or similar problem I know to avoid it or just ride it out but I was in a total panic when it happened the first time.

Transmitters are not clean....they emitt spurious radiation...at frequencies other than the fundamental (harmonics). The levels of this spurious radiation is strictly controlled during Type Approval (certification) of the radio equipment. However many conditions, post Type Approval, affect spurious radiation. Weather, bad earthing, mismatches, all affect this phenomena. If you are close to a high power transmitter, the red & white tower, you may experience spurious radiation which affects our airband receivers, in the 118 to 136 MHz band.
