Rotax 912 Problems

Postby Arnulf » Sat Dec 15, 2007 8:48 am

Hi,

Yesterday I did an oil change on loved and trusted 912. I was devastated when large chunks of some non metallic material came out with the oil.
Pulled the magnetic plug, was clean, no metal filings on it. Opened oil filter, it also had small filings of non metallic stuff in it.
Took the offensive material to Niren, he also could not itentify the material. Niren suggested I bring him the trike, and he will investigate.
Any suggestions what the problem coud be?

Before the oilchange, I did a short flight, temps and pressure were normal, and motor ran as smooth as ever.

Total time on motor is 155 hours, and 55 hours since last oil change.

Eish, I am so devastated that my pride and joy is not well

Regards,
Arnulf

Not only am I glad that it is non-metallic, but also that I got the itch to change the oil at 50 hrs, and not as recommended by 100 hrs. My lighty took his school mates for flips the other day. I shudder at the thought if the motor would have quitted then.

The stuff has a very dark colour, nearly black. Its quite hard. So probably not from oil lines. The pieces are up to 5mm long, about 1mm square, with fairly even sides. Possibly the plastic case of some bearing?

Hi,

Some info on this matter:

Niren determined that the chunks in the oil were pieces of a non metallic thrust washer in the gearbox.

Motor is fixed.
I am very impressed by the service and backup from Aviation Engines.
