Did a JK05 conversion this morning

Howdy guys. Had an opportunity to get a JK05 on my license so grabbed it this morning. Of course the weather was far from ideal. Very low cloud / mist hanging around so we sat around for an hour and then at around 07:00 it lifted enough to be legal. Off we went. Impressions.
1) It's no fun to get into and out of. It's very tight in the cockpit for me but once I'm in it's ok. No space to swing a cat in at all. Very reclined seating position - feels like you driving a porsche. Getting out is a mission.
2) The switches is just about out of reach for me and the choke impossible to reach once strapped in.
3) The stick has no self neutral position during taxi'ing but not much of an issue. - it's also almost difficult to read the instuments if your passenger is tall as his knees obscures the pressure and temp gauges - so the passenger becomes co-pilot for read-outs.
4) Warm up took forever - flaps Ok to set- electrical and has an indicator in the cockpit. Trim - you have no idea where it is as also electrical but no indicator as all.
5) Airborne in a hurry - obviously trim was quite a bit up as I had to fight to even try and keep her in ground effect - climbs like a homesick angel and the speed climbs quite quickly.
6) Flaps off and trim forward and she accelerates very quick. 90 mph at 4700 rpm and 105 mph at 5000 rpm no problem.
7) Stick inputs are nice and feedback OK but the amount of travel is quite small so you have to be smooth.
8) Requires a lot of rudder work - even more than the cheetah and you must keep an eye on that ball. Will probably improve with a lot of time in her but you can't have lazy feet.
9) Hard to slow her down in the circuit to get to flap speed so you have to throttle back quite a bit compared to the cheetah. Once settled thought the speed is easy to maintain and she was easy to fly in the circuit. Visibilty forward is great - not bad sideways and above either. Maintained just under blue line till threshold - let her settle - hold off and she floats down nicely and settles on main gear - hold the nose off and you better be awake on the rudder.

All in all a nice airplane - you must be awake near the stall - tends to start dropping a wing and the owner manual says no intentional stalls so I suggest keeping to that. It's very tight for 2 big boys in the cabin - not much packing space other than about a vanity case.
Lovely to fly but don't be napping.
Will I buy one - yes maybe if I had cash lying around spare. Still like the cheetah as I think it will handle rougher and short field better. One thing to watch out for. Man this thing has long wings - watch those hangar doors if you don't want her to pick up hangar rash all the time. This one has evidence of that being repaired on the wing tips a few times. Oh yes engine in this one - 912 Extra and 3 blade Petzke prop.

I experienced the same a few years back when I flew one. I also found the trim to be over sensitive. I'm big so the entrance and exit was a bit of a mission.

I found the approach to be daunting. Aim 1/3 short of the threshold to land 1/3 in otherwise you float forever!

I think the TOPAZ is an improvement on the Junior... try and fly one and compare Stephan!

Yeah speed management is something you have to be more aware of than in the cheetah. Very slippery so you have to watch that on the landing but it does float a bit after the arrival and flare. Will see if I can hitch a ride in a topaz.. there was one on the field on saturday - but they looked so similar I didn't bother.

Fit an 'OilStat' to the engine - inproves the warmup time considerably - Consult Taliban engines

Hehe - thanks yes would do that maybe one day if I could affort to buy one. Not my aircraft unfortunately - just 'rented' to get the conversion done seeing that the opportunity was there. But will give the advise to the current owner if the warmup time bothers him. Actually it suited me this morning as it gave me more time to get used to the instrument layout and to do the pre-flight checks. It does eat money though for nothing as the clock is ticking with you sitting on the ground and not actually flying when you pay by the hour. I believe comet aviation supplies do sell them too.

I know someone that just bought a new JK-05 and the rear window popped out during flight the weekend! Not a good show!

Something else to watch on this aerie and that is the cruise speed is really very close to the VNE! Therefore speed management is of the essence! I found a JAB easier to manage speedwise in the circuit. I hear the Flamingo is also very slippery and one has to think ahead....

Once again - only my humble opinion! (^^)

VNE is 200 km/h - cruise really only around 170 so you have a bit of leeway. But dive and you'll get there in a hurry.

Thanks Stephan, interesting post !

I have looked at the JK05 and I was quite impressed, till I climbed in, and realized that to see the instruments I had to move my long legs around. Having said that it is still a nice plane that I would love to own.

I am sure speed management will be more of a challenge in the JK05, it is a very clean plane and dropping the nose could get you into trouble quickly. But it is something that you will get used to, I remember going from X-Air to Rans S12 to Streak Shadow to Jabiru every time it was a bit difficult in the beginning but soon second nature.

Conversions are fun, gives you a change to play with a new toy without committing to it ! (A bit like a one night stand  )

My next conversion is a tail dragger conversion, after all the horror stories I have heard I have to give it a try, will be doing it on a Bush Baby, a plane I like so will be great to have that on the license as well.

Fly safe,
Rudi

Hi Rudi, I just completed my Tailie coversion (on my Savage) and at first it was terifying (but remember - i'm used to trikes) - and my fist ever tailie landing ended up in a ground loop because i didnt work the feet enough and my "battleship"feet also touched the toe brakes resulting in some verry interisting moves on the ground! Now, newly converted tailie / stick and rudder pilot, i can really say, every landing is different and it gives you an awsome feeling of accomplishment IF you get it right - and i say IF because every landing is a potential go-around! you just have to keep flying the plane - until you ae in the hangar !!! But it is lots of fun. going solo with the tailie gave me more satisfaction than with the Jabi / cheetah conversions that i have done up to date! Really worth the effort!

Very nice dash! But this is the more expensive brother the Topaz! Not a JK 05......but than again probably you will have your JK 05 conversion as well if you do it in a Topaz? what about the material on the dash real polished timber?

The JK is a great value for money plane. there is one owned at our airfield in a syndicate and all the guys are happy with the aircraft.

I have done a few hours in it but not the 'conversion' per say, but I found that both the JK and the Topaz want to get off the ground before they are actually capable of flying. Sounds crazy but that is the feeling you get. Very easy aircraft to stall on take off if you not watching your speed.

I also found it a bit uncomfortable for my size, but the average guy will have no problems flying it other than reaching the throttle or switches in a hurry if needed.

All in all I think its well worth the money. Even the Topaz is a lot of aerie for what you paying compared to the others on the market.

But I still think the SportCruiser is a step up ($$) ($$) ($$) ($$)

So you have a sportcruiser based on Petit?
