Garmin 196

What can be considered a good price for a Garmin 196 with all attachements & accessories. Around 9 months old and looked after extremely well. I have one being offered to me by somebody upgraded to a 296 (colour) For me it will be a leap from my GPS 12.

I just bought a new 196 for R6500, because I might get lost flying around my patch and it looks cool and batman has to fit the mounts for me

Hey Dog Man. Please post some pic's of the mounted 196 when done. I have one that I am going to mount as soon as I have my trike back here with me. I do not have too many options though, they are pretty big. I am going to relocate my radio and mount the 196 in it's place. I will have to make an angled plate to mount the bracket on though.

Any thoughts? Anyone

I would move the REV counter to make way for the 196. This would require you to change your whole panel though. You have so much space if your instruments were grouped more economically...

Fitting 196 to AIrborne I would use RAM (the best) U-bolt mount - Should fit onto Airborne's front profile tube as it is small and round unlike Aquilla - This lifts the GPS above your instruments and would work great I reckon

Picture attached of my Gemini where I used this U-bolt mount to fit a Garmin 72 to the front profile, worked like a charm.

Also attached a picture of where my Garmin 96c was fitted to my Airborne - 96 much smalkler than 196 though

If the u-bolt does not quite fit around the Airborne front profile (it should though I think) it can be bent a little to make it fit around - It is normal steel bolt in shape of a U and can be bent to fit around the front profile tube

The model number for the RAM U-bolt with yoke is RAM-B-149-GA7

I will post pics after the 196 is fitted to my Aquilla for interest sake - But doing it a little different there

LEt me know if you want to go the front profile-route, there is a Airborne in my hanger (MaverickSA's) and we can test if U-bolt will fit and let you know before you buy

I will have a look, but I think 196 she ees too beeg for profile tube. Can't see much else with it there.

Ja maybe you right Cali - But remember it can tilt up down, sideways etc, won't be in instruments way at all - In fact right above - You position it where you want and won't have to look down everytime to see the GPS Remember the 196 is wide and not long. I would have fit mine above the instruments if only the Aquilla did not have such a huge front profile tube

How do you suggest I get power to it. The silly little lighter socket that Airborne put on the left is not big enough for the regular plug.
I am probably missing something somewhere.

Cali, that lighter socket is called a Hella plug I think, you get a connection that changes it to normal lighter plug - I did it on my Airborne - Got adaptor from Darkhelmet but should be regularly available

I have my 196 mounted using the supplied yoke mount onto my lower boom tube on the Aerotrike Safari. I suppose with the Airbourne this is not really an option, because you do not have much real-estate left on the tube, but it puts it within very easy reach, even if you have to look down a bit to see it. I added a bit of safety by strapping on the open side of the c-clamp arrangement with a couple of hefty cable ties.

Because I have no pod, I can't help having nightmares about seeing my expensive toy falling below me because the mounting clip just let go. I suppose Garmin didn't design this thing to be used primarily on open aircraft, but I cant believe that they did not include some sort of loop to attach a lanyard to for added safety. Consequently, I have looped a piece of fishing trace around the bottom of the aerial, to which I clip a lanyard attatched to the trike.

The instruction manual shows the wires used to power the GPS off the plug, and spare plugs can be bought if you want to save the cigarette lighter plug for your in-car use. I just run the GPS on rechargable 2300mAh AA's and get about 8 hours run time. The battery level indicator seems to give a good idea of the charge state of the batteries, and I carry a spare set.

One hassle is that the supplied computer cable is RS232 serial port - ok for older computers, but not for USB machines. You need to get hold of an adapter (RS232 to USB) and you need to set up your computer to read it. An IT fundi friend of mine helped me with this, and I would be able to pass this knowlege on if only I had not lost my laptop to an affirmative shopper.

This arrangement allows you to set up the Flightbook program, which downloads your flight logbook. It also allows you to download your snail-trail info to be viewed on Easyplan or the pro version of Google Earth - very cool! Resting your cursor on the trail in Easyplan gives you all your vitalstatistics at that point - speed, alt, time etc.

Hi.
I used a ram mount allowing the unit to swivel to any position I want. The cable runs into the pod and is wired with the ignition.
Ram has a mount for your tube onto which you can do a similar setup without moving anything, just a suggestion.
