Aero Maps

Postby Gadget » Tue May 22, 2012 10:51 am

Hi.
Can anyone makes some suggestion on printing aviation maps for use in an aircraft please? Yes, I do use a GPS but would like to have the 1:500k maps on A4 available, like a small flip folder, laminated.

Thanks,
Gadget

I found a very good solution at http://www.vfrplanner.org

Speak to rural development in Cape Town, they have the CD for all the maps that you can print as you wish!

This seems like the solution we need. Any contact details for the Surveyor General? That would really help a lot.

The problem with these maps are, first, you are not allowed to print them(Yeah right), and second, when you print them they are not to scale. I for instance want to do a flight to Carnarvon from Cape Town. I have to carry three large maps. Now imagine jiggling those when flying a trike. I am sure someone on the forum has figured out how to print them correct? I see the map on the vfr planner cannot be printed either.

Fully agree ,
vfrPlanner works great.
I use it in conjunction with AirTrack on my iPad. (-)

Ok, you must be joking right? I will rather spend the ipad money on fuel to fly somewhere. I have easycockpit and it works perfectly. The issue is electronics. I want to have an accurate alternative and I am sure someone has figured it out by now. It would be great to have an app that imports the map and you can plan on it and print it out accurately.

Well,

You will have the best tool on hand..vfrPlanner checks everything from your route to the weather. You can check your weather in flight and if it looks bad,do a route change in flight..Your map is google earth..does not get better than that ##

Plus you have music and an inflight movie for the long trips..Only thing needed is a s#xy air hostess..she can hand you the popcorn and coke from the back seat  ##

the fact of the matter is that the days of dedicated devices in GA is something of the past, even garmin realised it and launched their ipad version in the usa

getting a decent gps today (with 1/2 of the features that vfrplanner/vfrtracker has to offer) will set you back around R6,000 which is the same price of an ipad 3g 16gb + $95 for a ipad clip-in 'kneeboard' + 10 hours battery live. Beter still try Gumtree.co.za for 1/2 the price on a second hand

R42 per month :?: - for flight planning, gps navigation, moving map display, flight log, upper wind, live tracking, forecast weather, actual weather, metars/tafs, 1:1 000 000 + 1:500 000 maps, sos message, etc etc for the iphone/ipad, and as a bonus weather and flight planning on your desktop pc, + regular updates, not to mention the other 1000+ features and 'inflight entertainment' the ipad have to over ($$)

R42 = 1 x braai pack + 1 x beer per month (^^)

i'm afraid the days of paper maps that only helps for 80nm 1:500 000 thereafter it becomes impractical swopping maps in a trike, is something of the past. Even usa pilots are replacing the traditional flighbags for ipads - zdnet.net 'Seattle Pi notes that a 1.5 pound iPad replaces about 35 pounds of paper, saving an airline +- $1.2 million worth of fuel per year.

decide for yourselve :?
