Dog Tags!

Firstly, to clarify: Dog Tags, typically worn in the military, allows a PIC/PAX to carry important information (name, blood group, next of kin, etc.) around their necks on two metal tags and which allows the communication of this important information in the event of an accident/injury in which the PIC/PAX is unconscious or, in the worst case, killed.

Following on from the recent interest (viewtopic.php?f=1&t=17907) in having dog tags made I swung past the Army Surplus Store in Pretoria West and discovered that they had two types:

Conventional GV* Type R39.00

* Grens Vegter

Rubber-Edged Type R49.00
Dog Tags 7.jpg

This type is clearly softer on the chest area for those that did their border duty in the 70s and 80s and have softened somewhat!

User Guide!

The Conventional GV Type comes with a user guide  which is clearly of use to the less technical among us!!

If you go with the Rubber-Edged type you are on you own in terms of working out how to link up the bath plug chain!

Dog Tag Information:

A suggestion is as follows . . . . with engraving on BOTH sides of the same Dog Tag, so EACH Dog Tag will contain THIS information:
Dog Tags 2.jpg
Dog Tags 2.jpg (44.33 KiB) Viewed 6617 times
Perhaps add ID number, Allergies??

NOTE: Punched type printing (normal animal dog tag type printing) will probably not allow BOTH sides to be used due to the nature of the punching process, i.e. I suspect that the punching will show through on the reverse side.

Why TWO Dog Tags?

Why the need for two dog tags, some may ask? Well, in the good old GV days, should your buddy take a hit you would pop one in their mouth and take one with you as a record of your fallen comrade. So, I am not sure how this would translate into microlight aviation terms, but those wishing to be dog-tagged can decide to wear either one or two.

How to procure your Dog Tags?

You can obviously pay the store a visit, or if there is enough interest, I will procure in bulk PER club or group of friends and post them on (we can work out finances, etc.) - in this case please PM me with quantities and I will take it from there.

The Army Surplus Store contact information is:
Tel: (012) 327 3282
Email: yunus@armystores.co.za
Website: http://www.armystores.co.za
Address: 60 Mitchell Street, Pretoria West (0117)

Here's to sincerely hoping that Dog Tags are worn but NEVER needed!!! (^^)

Safe Skies! (-)

The one with the rubber silencers is much more comfortable.

On mine i have :- Name / ID number / I.C.E. number / Blood Group / Allergies
I allways wear them when i fly and even when i scuba or go climbing.

If i could get a bulk supplier i can make these up quite easily for like R50 / R75 for a set (Rubber silenced type) with all the above info on, but yes a bulk supplier of the tags was a bit of a pain to get hold of.

Good Idea if somebody can get me bulk supplies i can get the line started.

Had a dog tag made up some time ago with the rubber edging. The rubber eventually perished, so one will have to replace this from time to time.
