Plane to buy with a limited budget??
Plane to buy with a limited budget??
An academic question for the boffins out there.
Assume that some one had a limited budget (it does happen) but wanted to buy a 3-axis plane. This hypothetical pauper lives in the Cape so owning a trike is about as useful as snow sledge in the Sahara.
Said aspirant pilot has (too) many hours on a trike but no 3-axis experience.
What would you suggest he/she buys for
a) up to R50000
b) up to R100000
(without buying a partnership in a plane) ??

The only 3-axis aircraft I could recommend under R 50 000 is a Flight-star. Its a lovely little aircraft and although only a single seater, you can have many hours of fun, safely.
I know of one up here which the owner might just want to sell (he now has a 2-seater as well). If you are interested, let me know and I will pm you his details.
Its quite forgiving and has a fantastic glide. Pretty easy to look after yourself as well.

Griff,
is your friend talking about a new or 2nd hand purchase?
Even 2nd hand he is going to be pushed to get a 3-axis for sub 50K except for a quicksilver or skyfox. Not necessarily a bad thing, would need a little/lot of work. Fortunately they are common and he can get brand new Dacron sails, premade from Aircraft Spruce in the states as well as all the other parts. They are dead simple and can easily be fixed.
Sub 50K he could do a personal loan from the bank. Over 50K he ia
going to have to look at money out of a bond or some other nefarious means.
For 100K he will have lots of choices but it is getting ready cash that is the problem.

On 3 axis side not much around for R50K. Know of the following for sale in that category.
KRII (very difficult to learn on and at alt not a 2 crew machine)
Teenie Two (Single seater, but it is aerobatic)
Miser (Know nothing about it)
Beaver (Tandem and were often used as trainers, but most prices have gone up a bit)
For less than R100K, I am not sure of what is available, but would recommend that the aspirant aerie owner does some homework on his needs and then tries to match budget and needs. If you over extend the budget you will have no cash for fuel and it will become a burden. If you buy a cheap and nasty which can't fly in wind for eg, it could be dangerous and also will become burden and will not fly. Do not buy an aerie just for sake of having one.
Alternatively find aerie which is not flying much and offer to pay for excess insurance on mate's aerie to get yourself rated and put of the insurance as specified pilot. Get excess insurance with DJ&A and use the cash to get PPL and couple extra hrs on type with instructor.... Both win as his plane flies more (reuces his MPI cost per hr) and thus costs him less and you get to fly. Not easy, but if God intended man to fly he would have given us more money
Syndicates are not a bad thing if you are a social flyer, but choose partners well. Cash is usually the biggest problem....
Good luck

You can probably get a Koala 2 seater side-by-side anywhere between 50-100K.
There are 5 at our airfield and we really enjoy them. I believe there are a number of them in the Western Cape as well

Hussle the human mind.!
Forget the specifics for a moment. At most airstrips there ia normally one or more hangars concealing some dust covered, spiderwebbed 'pride and joy' of some dinasour, who has'nt flown for ages coz he's lapsed his licence, ATF, or his lifestyle no longer affords him the chance to fly when he wants to.
His kids are not as interested as when he started out and his wife is plain anti.
What is an investment to him is a 'pain in the arse' to his wife who has told him she wants nothing to do with his childish dream and it's bad enough that he has to play golf, what about selling all his crap in the hangar so that she can eventually buy her retirement cottage that they 'both' want.
Once you've peeked through all his crap and hidden treasures the first thing you obviously say is " Not exactly what I had in mind, BUT;
I'll help you sell / clean out your crap,
We'll consider selling your plane, but since the market is k@k and you still want some association i.e. flp/ cleaning, or general potter around like you've being doing for the last 15 years, first let me help you update your Authority to fly.
I'll get a hangar mate to occupy the space from all the crap that I 've helped you chuck out so your wife can see R300 bucks a month.
I'l want fist option but I need the plane to get 'rated'.
Lets see, You've got 15 grand from all your crap, a hangar mate for some rental, I've got our plane in the air, you can come flipping anytime when you're not playing golf ( coz you're just never going to fly again), hows about I offer you fifty grand cash. I can pay your another 3 grand a month till we hit another 100 grand.Get you wife to start planning her 'dream.'
Then approach your mate and say 'I ve get a cool deal, I'm offering you in on my bargain for fifty grand cash and 3 grand a month till you pay a half share of my new plane.
You help me use your plane

If nothing else works, get your mate to sleep with the aerie owner's wife and afterwards tell her " thats what all us aspiring pilots do".
"What, do you think we just D.I.Y on our old aeries all day?. No, us who don't fly, we go around banging each other's wives. What do you think your husband is doing now.?"
Watch how fast you fifty grand cash influences him, five minutes after he's walked into the door.
