Skybound – poor Demon has admitted to inadvertently deleting a couple of postings and managed to blush for his efforts

The changeover obviously didn’t go to plan but it does appear to be functioning normally my side.

Again, HUGE thanks to Demon.

I say blame that one Tele communications company. They are forcing us all to move sites from SA based servers to overseas servers owing to high bandwidth charges in SA. I see this forum now based in the USA with EZhost.

Hi everyone - wow! - I knew this board was a busy place, but didn't realise just how much of a real community asset it is!

I'm the guy helping Barry get the board transferred to the new server - since Friday when we first transferred all the files and data we have had some glitches with transferring due to the large size of some of the data tables in the database (where all your messages/avatars/profiles/ranks etc etc are stored). You guys certainly have a lot to say!

With the aid of some clever new software we can now reliably get those transfers completed to the new database, whilst accurately preserving all existing data.

This will be done today, Monday 27 Feb and should take about an hour(as long as Telkom's ADSL network keeps networking!).

When we begin the process the board will be deactivated and we'll get it up and running asap.

BTW - any 'lost' posts are not actually lost - they are somewhere in the database, just not showing up and we'll try to restore these - no guarantees though!

BTW2 - auto log-in - you may have told the board that you want to be remembered and logged in each time you visit, but even software this clever can't reliably identify you from session to session. This is because your ISP assigns a different IP address to your computer each time you connect to the internet - the only way to be reliably identified is to buy a static IP - at about R200 per month is it worth it?!!

regards

EZhost, the board software does not track the user log on by an IP address. It uses cookies to keep you logged in which are IP independant.

Also on phpbb2, if the database is any larger than about 10 meg, the backup option does not work, even though it indicates that it has completed. Even phpMyAdmin tools do not work.

The only reliable way to do it is at MySQL command line level where you do a full dump of the database. The same goes for uploading the data to the new database.

Hope that helps.

Backup and cookies

Postby ezhost » Tue Feb 28, 2006 2:59 pm

Skybound - you are quite right about the backup and restore - but we overcame that problem, I am pleased to say! The total size of this forum db is about 40 Megs - rather large!

The IP address thing - I visit a number of boards running phbbb2 - and none of them always remember me (Avcom included). I would have thought that even the cookies need some way to identify your computer and this surely has to be the IP address that is used during that session - next session after reconnecting to the network you have a different IP address, so the cookie can't do it's stuff properly?

Sorry have to disagree Ezhost. :D

I am on a static IP - majority of the time, yet it still forgets me. Have not had to log back on to AvCom for about six months and works even when not on static IP (on dial up- assigned dynamic IP)

If memory serves me correctly, there is a known issue with the s.ware and a fix available for the automatic log in problem. Tried to look for it for you, but the phpbb support forum is down at present.
