THE BEST AIRCRAFT?
THE BEST AIRCRAFT?
The best (LSA) most affordable for SA conditions?
Another can of worms.....
I vote for a Bushbaby Explorer with a Jab 3300!
Why?
Local production and backup
Tried and tested
Resale value
Great for dirt strips
STOL performance
Handles great
Affordable
With the Jab3300:
Affordable
Power
Great maintenance backup service
Performace
2000 TBO
Nou gaan ek raas kry!
(Behalwe van Boet)

Re: THE BEST AIRCRAFT?
I think it depends on mission and budget.
I split roughly as follows....
<R200K - VW & 503 types (incl. maybe some of the older 582's) - Cubby, Bush baby, Cheetah, Beaver, Piet, etc.
<R350K - Big competition in this area. New 582's vs bottom end of the 912's - all of the above just bigger engines or newer.
<R500K - All the new 912's and maybe a 914 here....
HOW MUCH???? (plastic fantastics like Flamingo, Samba, Sting etc. Awesome aeries but the Euro exchange rate is not doing them any favours...)
No budget I would got for Flamingo or Sting or WT9. (prob Flamingo since I have flown in 1 and it slightly more comfi for me than the sting Carbon RG. never been in WT9, but looks nice as well....)
<R500K - Bush baby with a Rotec Radial engine
or the Jabi SPT with 3300 engine....
<R350K - Bush baby with Jab or new BMW engine or outside chance of older 912ULS BB/Cheetah...
<R200K - Cubby and R50K fuel money vs anything else out there......
If I did not have to build it the RV12, Rans and the CH601 would also feature....
The 701/savanah is also an awesome aerie - I just never had the need for 1.... if mission is short rough stuff (like bakkie) then this is impossible to beat. Wish they made it in taillie....

Re: THE BEST AIRCRAFT?
I think an explorer with the Jab 3300 would be the ultimate......

Re: THE BEST AIRCRAFT?
If you have R1.6M plus tax, you can buy a new Sportsman, BUT
If you are just a normal person who has to budget for his groceries,
and if you want something that can do a bit of everything....
remember that very few pleasure aviators fly long distances at regular intervals...
so why an Explorer; taildragger?
South Africa has many more dirt strips than prepared runways.
The Explorer is good for around the patch as well as a long trip
It does not cost an arm and a leg
If you enjoy pain; you can build it yourself
If bent- easy to repair
Why a Jab3300?
I have a Jab J430 and I can tell you the engine is simply the best.
I have owned Continental, Rotax 582, 912, 912X and 912S and VW powered aeries
and have a host of other aeries on my licence..... and the Rotax with all that plumbing
and gearbox is good for what is was designed for: Snowmobiles!
The service that I get from Legair, the Jabiru guys- is far above notch in all ways.
I had a taildragger Bushbaby with a 912extra. Loved the aerie and hated the Rattex with
all my heart.
The Jab J430 is great and I love it- but lacks the dirt STOL dirt strip ability of lighter taildraggers.
Courses for horses; - many will have different tastes. This is just an opinion, but for
a low budget pleasure flying machine that can do a bit of everything- I'll vote for the
Explorerer with a night rated panel and a Jab3300!

Re: THE BEST AIRCRAFT?
Die woord "hoendertande" comes to mind. I don't know of any available at the moment. A brand new Explorer with a Jabi 3300 with a analogue panel, radio and headsets will set you back approx R370-R380k excl VAT. Full glass cocpit in the region of R400-420k depending on options requested. These prices are factory build fly-away. Engine prices are linked to exchange rate. A new six will be approx R120-125k excl VAT

Told you so. Even with the extra's-- still much much less than the composites and the blikkies like the Technam.KFA wrote:Die woord "hoendertande" comes to mind.
