Some unusual whale pics over Walker Bay last weekend. I wonder how rare an albino Southern Right Whale calf is? Apologies for the poor picture quality :(

Might be wrong, and no whale expert here, but I do believe that all Right whale calves are born white. Ask Grumpy how many white calves there is at witsand during birth season, and then slowly they turn black before moving off to the north.

It is quite rare to see a white one this late in the season though.

I pulled this off the internet. It's an account of a sighting near the mouth of the Breede River last year. Not definitive, but probably correct.....

A pure white calf caught our attention. Most of the newborns were pitch black, so this young calf really got our attention. Apparently 95 percent of the total population is born black, and only five percent are born with this strange pigmentation.

Strangely we don't see white adults, and apparently over time these white calves start developing black areas over their bodies, and over time almost the entire animal is black.

No whale expert either, But am led to believe that all Baleen (The correct name) Southern Right calves are born white and change to black/grey within 2 weeks. Very seldom are they seen as the mother keeps the calf in the deep for protection. Only when the surroundings are considered safe enough will the mother venture closer to land where these calves can be sighted. Very rare, but has been seen at Witsand (mouth of the Breede) a few times.
A similar pic was taken at the Breede by a pac that John Arnold from Wintervogel took for a flip a few months ago.

Well I am a whale expert. Was married to one for a while and then swapped her for a dolphin or is it perhaps changing into a moray eel.

I can catagorically state that it is un adulturated Imperialist postage on this websight.

The Suthen Right is no more. Ask Mester Terreblanche.

The liettel whale is not a real whale but a toy for the odder black little whale. It is manufuctured by imperialist colonialistic factories. The ANC Youf league will take the issue up with the Souf African Toymakers association. There must be no more white Barbie Dolls and Whales.

Seriasly,

Julious.
