I don't know the number - but I guess there are a lot more than 100 light aircraft that are being flown over the 450 kg MAUW limit with an MPL. This has been going on for the last 5 years at least - if not 10! Everyone who has been in this industry for some time knows it. The CAA knows it but they did not do anything about enforcing the MPL weight imit rule very strictly. Many of the 3-axis manufacturers and importers (4 of the 7 local manufacturers and 11 of the 20 importers) deal with this problem often.

Andre Swanepoel said accidents (I didn't question him which ones) ... the one I know of was with the JK-05 where 2 people were killed.

Call the CAA to get more info ... (011) 545 1000.

Our job as the MISASA committee is quite simply to look after the interests of our sport and that is what we intend.

Anyone wants to answer my stupid question below?

Just as a matter of interest.
If I have a MPL licence, and I want to upgrade to a PPL, do I have to write more exams, or are the ones I have done already enough?
Lets say I dont want to do night rating.

I have just spoken to Claudia at CAA licensing, and she confirmed that you have to do the PPL exams and don't get credit for your MPL theory tests. From the end of March, PPL theory is the Ray Swales system.

This is quite funny, as I have just finished writing my PPL theory exams, and they were not a touch on what my MPL instructor put me through.

PPL = 20 multiple choice questions per subject, all 5 subjects together, 2 hours to complete.

MPL = 40 multiple choice questions, plus 5-10long questions. 1.5 - 2 hours per subject!

Ditto, 3 licences, intruduce SPL and upping the limmit for PPL

MPL for aircraft MAUW (MaxAllUpWeight) smaller than 450 KG (25 Hour training)
SPL for aircraft MAUW smaller than 600 KG and fit category (25 Hour training)
PPL for aircraft MAUW bigger than 600 KG OR does NOT fit SPL category like VP & retracts (40 Hour Training)

Your higher licence valid for lower if you have a conversion on the aircraft.

Do not reinvent the SPL wheel, introduce it and up the PPL rule to 600KG +, without upping the PPL requirements. Keeping the current MPL rules will keep MPL simple.

You would think so?

I know there is plenty red tape and other issues which need to be addressed, but seems like now is as good a time as any with new parts 61, 62 etc comming out?
