More almal,

(971 nm.) in 26 uur gevlieg teen sowat 72 kpu ( 37nm/u). Tot dusver was die weer relatief goed behalwe by Lichtenburg, Upington en nou by Gruenau.

We left Klein- Aus Vista fairly early for a quick breakfast at Helmeringhausen and after packing the trailer Paul and I took off on a dirt road and set off for the 39 nm leg to Duwisib Castle. The flight took us over the most beautiful flat topped mountainous terrain with ravines cutting through the mountains and presented very few places to land and again confirmed our absolute faith in those little Rotax machines. The mountains were again followed by flat desert like open spaces that made us breathe a lot easier for a short while. We then encountered some very uncomfortable turbulence in the mountains until we climbed to about 6000’ where we encountered very smooth conditions for a short while. Fortunately Duwisib Castle appeared and I landed in some heavy cross winds after Paul had to abort his first landing attempt due to gusts. With absolutely nowhere to tie our trikes down, we manoeuvred our trikes through some gates and around trees to tie down under a tree for the night.
We walked up to reception for a drink and a bite before going to the Castle for a looksee. The Castle was built by Capt von Wolf and his American millionaires wife Jayta in 1908. He bred horses from imported Australian and British bloodlines and in 1914 on the way back to England to buy another stallion, he learnt of the outbreak of the Great War, joined and was killed 14 days later in the battle of the Somme in France. She never returned and never claimed title to the estate. The Castle is decorated with the most beautiful furniture and has two chairs that belonged to the King of Spain.
We slept in the camping site and Paul decided on the luxury of the self -catering unit for the night.

Alan sorry for the slow response. We are stuck at Sesriem with 50 kph gale force winds. We might have a window tomorrow to fly west over Sossusvlei to Meob Bay and head north to Walvis Bay. We are still thinking about it because it is in excess of 180 nm's and very desolate. We're meeting a local triker, Chris Fourie who has said that it is the better option because of the rotor effects of the East weather over the mountains along the regular route past Solitaire. No roads along the coast but plenty of landing spots on the beach. The winds are by all accounts also calm along the coast. Because of all the delays we will give Botswana a miss this time and head back after a huge pilot's fly-in at Outjo on the 15 th of June and exit Namibia through Rietfontein. Our ATF's expire on 30 June and our Overflight Clearances on 25 June.

What is obvious on a trip like this is that over planning is not necessary, inevitably the journey takes on a life of it's own and more often than not takes you away from your planned route.

Vlieg versigtig. Die wind by die see tel maklik 30 knope op binne minute. Rescue 911 is ver. :)

I am thoroughly enjoying your diaries on the web-site, both from the flying side of things as well as mother hen's perspective. Keep the stories going ... pleaaaaaaze ! vhpy

Very interesting decision now I see. Over occupied land in (possible) kak easterly winds, or over the desert and up the coast with not a soul in sight. I think I would go for first mentioned, seeing that S&R are at hand.

Anyway, good luck on the decision making and looking forward to your next report.
