The weather!!!

Postby Fairy Flycatcher » Fri Oct 06, 2006 4:58 pm

The winds have arrived in full force! Flew yesterday in over 20kt SW, and today in well over 20kt NE, called it quits at about 11:00.

Both days' flying wasn't bad, but going into wind was SLOW! Orographic turbulence combined with thermic turbulence can get a bit much thouhg, and we're not in the business of scaring people  :D

We flew with Arnulf's wife and sister in law? today. They loved it, and we might have another female pilot convert.... :D :D

How's everyone else's flying going at the moment? Apart from DH who's working tooooooo damn hard :(

It seems that Murphy has been given a temp job as a skygod...

This morning from before sunrise the wind was howling well over 20kt. We phoned met, who informed us that by about 8 am we can expect over 40kt. Overhead we had some lenticulars (standing wave from strong wind over the 'Berg)

So we quickly cancelled all students and scenic flights. Just as we put the phone down to the last one, the wind dropped to about 2kts! Lennies gone!

We ask Met : whats up? They don't know, but the wind is less than 5kt all along the coast. We phone a couple of people back, and ask them to come and fly.... did about 1.5hrs before the wind caused us to cancel the rest - again! (people must think we're a bit desperate or just plain weird  :( )

Now just over 30kt. Gusty. Not very nice :( :(

Demo flight this morning to Franshoek and Simonsberg.. got as far as Simonsberg -- surprising smooth, but winds cranking high up

Coming outta of East low level and bumpy, NE 2500', NW 4500' 50-55MPH decided to turn around and ended up with a 0 groundspeed at one point, had to descend to get anywhere, training flight following with 25knot NW crosswind and landing crosswise on 32

This avo it musta been howling at 80+MPH through here - dont think well be going anywhere sunday :(

Did 45 min yesterday morning in semi-perfect conditions. :P NW picked up around 11:00 close to hurricane strength  . Last pilot who came in had a standing ovation from the gallery  :P  Now we have to hang on to the hanger for dear life.

WOW... seriously overcast wedder and Blunderboy, Batman and the "Demonic One" (if you dunno yet who the demonic one is - please PM the scribe who knows who he is)

I bought some new Harley Goggles, but they have a nasty tint and I grounded myself a goo 40 minutes before I needed too... this was NO gatflying afternoon, it was AWESOME - how did you make it home Blunderboy? Demon?
