Hawk Arrow vs Titan Tornado

Postby Tintin » Mon May 08, 2006 6:20 pm

We now have both these aircraft in SA (thank the maker), but which one to choose....
Arrow is cheaper, but Tornado is qwiker.
Arrow is fabric skin, Titan is Ali.
Arrow has lots of space, Titan a bit cramped (for my large frame in any case). Still to try the Titan S though.
All the rest is quite similar, stall, MTOW etc.
Any thoughts guys? I like 'em both, want 'em both, but the boss will only let me have one (maybe).

Tintin,

I noticed lots of views but no comments. It might be because the Hawk agency is brand new and as yet still untested. I don't think there are that many Titan's flying in SA either. To me they are both beautiful planes and they both have their strengths and weaknesses. The big negative of flyin Tandems is the lack of packing space, if you plan to go away on a weekend with a pax. I talk from experience since I fly a short wing Challenger. Two up there is no packing space.

The advantages are numerous with sleekness, speed, being the major.

Considering your altitude and you mentioned your size you would have to look at a 582 especially if you plan carry pax's often.

Are you planning on building it yourself or buying it ready to fly?

I'm not sure if you can get the Titan ready to fly.

I looked at buying the Hawk Arrow II prior to the Challenger, built locally to your spec and well priced ( R155 k + vat ready to fly - 503 ) it must be considered. The school who builds it can also do your convex/training if required. Performance is average for ML 3-axis.

Tornado in different class, kit alone will set you back R160-170k with 503 engine and probably R180 k for 582, then you still have to build it   Performance though is incredible - Cruise at 100 mph +++

I think there might also be some questions if this aerie will fall into the sub 450 lb class, CAA is getting quite serious about this which means that you might require different licence in nearby feature???

Looks awsome though :D :D

GR8-Dad mentioned the cruising speed and this hits on something you might not realise. 100MPH planes fly on their own, unless you have buddies with quick planes you are going to be very lonely. but then again it depends on what you are going to use the plane for.

Thats no problem. The oke with the fast plane can set up camp, cook lunch, organise cold beers etc. etc. etc. until the others arrive.

Both these planes have a long sloping front screen really sh*t flying into and landing into the sun. I have seen the test flying of the hawk in Hermanus looks good but I don't think much of the engine fitted very noisy and fuel injection packs up if you have an electric failure. Fit the new Jab engine and you will have the perfect combo or the rotax 503/582 on a tighter budget will also do the job. The Hawk is well made and looks comfy but getting in and out needs a bit of planning. The Hawk has very good STOL performance I would think that the Titan is a lot more slippery and one would battle to get it into a short field over an obstacle.

Tintin back in da house.

I flew in a Titan up here, running 912 (S I think). Beautiful plane, but V tight in the back - uncomfortable actually. Took the controls for a bit, and she flew very well. V qwik.
I fly trikes at the moment, so like the motor behind me. I saw Dave Austin at Wonderboom (Hawk agent), and climbed into his Hawk, while it was on a trailer (with Dave's say so), and it was quite easy to get into, and a lot of space. Flying up here, I'd opt for the 582. The Hawk is not as fast as the Titan, but the Titan sure is a sweet looking machine. I plan to build, so I can keep the shekles down. Titan is available as a kit and complete from the agent in CT I think. Right how I'm leaning toward the Hawk.

OK so here comes the obvious question, what about a Challenger, 90K gets you the kit, add 50K for a 582 and some instruments, you have an awesome Tandem, with performance and a brillienat track record, not that I'm biased mind you :>> :-(-( ':-
