Does anyone know the history of the MAC CDL?? It looks a bit like a Quicksilver.

And that's where the similarity, if any, ends! It is a basic, entry level 3-axis, wannabee microlight. A very old design.Griffin wrote:It looks a bit like a Quicksilver....
Seen them, been in them and glad I never bought one.
It has "spoilerons" in place of ailerons. They're there just for decoration by the way. They don't work well. If you're planning on making a turn, please deploy spoilerons about 2 minutes beforehand

You're better off just using the rudder...far more effective.
Single surface covering to the wings on the top only.
If that's all someone can afford to get into flying, then that's ok, but you'll want to move up soon to something better.

About 11 years ago I went for an introductory flight on something that looked alot like the the picture. Also had spiolerons and no ailerons. I believe is is technically a two axis. The spiolerons were apparently just for dipping the wing in cross-winds.
Anyway the flight was with Aero sport at FAFK so ask Louis I am 90% sure it was a MAC CDL.

I have flown in one and I have crashed in one, both the same flight
Picture this, Bapsfontein 2000, I have about 2 hours in total and my instructor sees one of his ex-students warming up the MAC for a flight. Instructor asks me if I would like a flight and always willing, what do I know, I agree. The pilot agrees and we get ready to takeoff.
Now this thing has no instruments except a tube type ASI. We take off into the wind, turn cross and the pilot thinks we are losing height. meantime it is just the ground sloping upwards, no ALT to check. He pulls back on the stick, full throttle and stalls the plane. I can hear the instructor on the radio shouting at him to nose down, build up airspeed.
We recover and he immediately pulls back into a stall again. Now he turns downwind and all the way down wind he is stalling the plane, and recovering, trying to keep it in the air. The problem was by now we were losing height because of the continous stalling, By the time he turned on to base and got himself in a complete panic, put the plane into a highnose full power-on stall and we didn't have time to recover.
I remember thinking that it is a bit too early to be landing
. I lifted my feet just before we hit the ground collapsing the undercarraige. By now I was highly the moer-in but I was alive, and unharmed.
Never told the wife to this day.

Mac CDL
Het self een gehad in 1982. Daardie stadium was dit naas die Quick "state of the art" Het die vliegtuig self by die vervaardiger Collin en sy broer Dough Little in Cato Ridge gaan haal. Vanaf Contermans Cloof gevlieg. What a bargain!!
Het opgehou vlieg weens die Suid Ooster terbulensie in die Kaap. Die Mac het dit nie goed hanteer nie. Het nog mooi foto's en goeie herhineringe!

Morpheus, upon reading that story I was picturing the surrounds and the events unfolding. I'm still laughing :D :D
And the Instructor on the ground shouting into the handheld...I can just see it now.... and his actions and reactions after the event :D
By the way, he's a damn excellent Instructor...trained me too :D
