Need help on GPS

Postby Bacchus » Sun Apr 23, 2006 1:37 pm

I can get a Garmin GPS 3 for about R2500-00. Second hand but nearly never used.
Being new to the scene I would like the " ou manne" to advise me on this.
Its got flight maps etc. Somebody also mentioned to mount it on the a- frame instead of the instrument pod. Make sence to me as it wil be closer to you when trying to make adjustments during flight.
Is this GPS readable?
Price right?
Right thing to go for?
Thanks guys.

Bacchus,

if it is the GPS Pilot, then it's all you will ever need. Majority of the guys I know are using them and they work very well. They might not have the absolutely latest detail but you can update the waypoints yourself.

A good GPS,I would expect to pay about R2K but even at R2.5K still worth it if it comes with all the original software, cables, brackets etc.

Garmin GPS

Postby ZULU1 » Sun Apr 23, 2006 6:27 pm

The GPS 3 is an old model, used to swear by Garmin and my old 3 pilot, and used it with a GPS12 in the bush , Moz etc. However the other brands have caught up now and have some amazing features especially the Magellan range.

I dont think its a quick purchase, list your requirements, talk to plenty people and only you can make the decision, ZAR2,5k you can get some nice kit. Try Kevin Bolton and Associates on the web as he stocks everything. I have an etrex vista but its a bit small for a trike as you cant see it in daylight. I would by choice buy the the GPS 96 (not colour).

Dont buy in a hurry and I am sure other people will advise same.
