Nav rally Saturday 6th December @ Springs

Postby Ugly Duckling » Mon Nov 17, 2008 8:22 am

The East Rand Flying Club, at Springs Airfield, invites you to attend a Navigation rally on Saturday the 6th December. This event is open to ERFC members and non members alike.

This is a perfect event for those with little or no experience in such an event as well as those that have attended many such rally’s - A great way to hone those nav skills and have a good time doing it.

Briefing will be at 9AM in the hangar(same hangar used for the breakfast on the south of the E-W taxiway). See details for trikes lower down

Breakfast and refreshments will be available.

The nav course will be 70 nautical miles long and each aircraft will be fitted with a GPS logger.

There will be a briefing on Friday evening, the 5th December, with boerewors rolls, for the trikes / weight shift aircraft. A cash bar (^^) will be available. This will enable the trikes to fly, at sunrise, when they like it the most vhpy vhpy .

Entrance fee is R100.00 to cover the hire of loggers and batteries + maps etc.

Frank Eckard and Mary de Klerk (both members of the Protea Flying team) will be hosting this event with the sole purpose of teaching you HOW TO FLY A RALLY. Why would you want to do this? Lots of reasons:
1. Improve your general flying skills
2. Improve your safety factor
3. Building Hours with a real purpose
4. Detailed Map preparation
5. Learn to map read and navigate your way around a course
6. Learn to fly accurately on a time based system
7. Enroute Observation
8. Sharpening up landing techniques
9. Achieving Provincial or National Colours

At the last Fun Rally Challenge held at Baragwanath, 21 Teams entered, learned a lot, had a bunch of fun, and left the airfield better off than they arrived.

WHAT MUST YOU BRING?
Not much except for
1. An Aircraft (Can maintain a speed of 60 – 130kts)
2. Pilot & Navigator
3. Protractor, Rulers, Pens, Pencils, Highlighters, Scissors, Prestik
4. Digital Stopwatch
5. Map – 1:250 000 (We will provide)
6. Minute Marker (We will provide)
For more information please call Frank Eckard on 083 269 1516 or Mary de Klerk on 084 880 9000.
To enter, please send an email to frank.eckard@mweb.co.za with your:
Name
Event
Aircraft
Call Sign
Nominated Ground Speed.

See you there vhpy 8)

Sounds like a fun day of flying? Just one question..... wouldnt you get more entries in the micro section if you reduce the required cruise speed to +/-50mph for trikes in stead of 60kts? Most trikes dont cruise at 60kts!!

Sure thing (^^) .
The 70 cruise was set up before we listened to you guys who want to be up at sparrows, hence Friday evening briefing. The idea was to have everybody back at a reasonable time.
The earlier you get airborne the slower you can fly.
Don't let a number put you off enjoing the event. vhpy

Please be advised that if you want to fly early, like Trike pilots do, then the briefing will be at 18h00 on Friday evening at the normal hangar on the South of the taxiway.
See you there
