A Beautiful Adventure (escaping the patch)

Postby Massimo » Thu Aug 13, 2015 11:08 am

Right.......Im putting it out there. Since the start of my flying career Ive dreamt of flying the SA coast in a trike. Years later and hundreds of excuses, Ive now decided its got to be done ## So im planning to do it early October. Keeping it simple, finding accommodation as we go, tenting, whatever. No ground crew.

Would be nice if 1 or 2 others joined in for the "gees" and adventure. So if u keen let me know. (^^) Time period probably a 2 week trip.

Remember you only live ONCE ## ## ($$)

Awesome. After multiple postponements, joined the EAA Margate weekend. Sea was clearer than Mauritius, multiple whale sightings and survived the dreaded 25 mile cross wind landing on Port St Johns.

I agree, too much arrangements creates too many delays. Set your dates and allow some to join earlier, leave later etc.

Thanks Vernon, sounds like a plan (^^)

Busy with flight planning so more info in the next few days/weeks. Planned Departure date 1 October.

If anyone has any other info to share, places to stay, contact people, fuel etc etc, that will all help. Thank you.

If folks are happy to sleep in a hangar, I am sure we could organise a few mattresses. Unfortunately, There is no hangarage. We have a secure electric fenced off area, but the trikes would have to be maneuvered through a six metre wide gate. There are three self catering units adjoining the field. Petrol station is very close, but I am sure I will be able to help out to get the fuel to you
Regards to Carmen.

This is the kind of adventure which is planned day by day as you fly.
A few years ago when I did a similar trip one of my most welcome aids were the book about all the private runways in Southern Africa, my laptop and cellphone.
Buy yourself a belly bag and with space on the rear seat you have ample place for all your luggage.
Lekker man lekker.

My Flight Planning at this stage:
1 - Sodwana
2 - Portshepstone/Port Edward
3 - East London
4 - Plett, Stanley Island
5 - Stellenbosch
6 - Vredendal
7 - Alexander Bay
8 - Kakamas
9 - Kuruman
10 - Potchefstroom
11 - Microland

If anyone has contacts that can assist in some of these far away places with accommodation and fuel slogs, that would be greatly appreciated. Or if you know of better places to stop over close to what i have indicated, then I would be very greatfull for the info.

Have a fantastic evening.
Cheers

Massimo, you are welcome to land at my strip (FARedl on Easy Cockpit) if you need to land for a leg stretch, or need petrol I can arrange for you. You would probably have to skirt the Swaziland Border which will take your route not too far north from Standerton. Wings Park in East Londen has mogas and they are a very friendly bunch. A nice sleepover is at Wavecrest just before EL with safe parking for the trike.

I am very jealous, enjoy!

Keep in mind that October is according to statistics the beginning of the raining season.
Your two weeks for the duration of your adventure might not be enough.
There are plenty sleep over places along your route with runways.
I will let you know about them soon.
Good luck and keep us informed about your adventure. vhpy
