Hi mulderpm,

Just a few comments on your list of requirements:
1) Do not take mefliam - this invalidates your medical. Doxycycline and Malanil are acceptable.
2) International driver's license not required for SADC countries, if you have a SADC license (including SA drivers licenses).
3) You require a BCAA temporary ATF for the aircraft.

Hi Justin,

Thanks for your comments.

If you intend to take prophylactics you must go and see your doctor. He/she will know which one you can/should take for the area you are visiting as a pilot.

A RSA drivers license is acceptable in all SADC countries but sadly some officials look for a reason to fine you. I have never had a problem with only my RSA license.

Your RSA NTCA ATF is only valid in the RSA. Point 4.10 on your ATF refers. As such you have to get authorisation to fly in another country. I will do a bulk Authorisation request about a month before we go. puff

Fly safe.

I suggest that all planes carry one of the MISASA tracking devices - in places the live signal back to the web will be lost but when you get signal it will catch up on your route.

I made the above button logo for the link from http://www.MISASA.org select the link below to download a high res copy.

for about R15 you can get a full colour dome badge made see http://www.badge.co.za

Thanks Alan,

Your badge looks great. The tracking devices will also add additional safety to the trip. Great idea. s023

We have been working on a commemorative stich on badge and a shirt (with a top pocket!) as well. The design of which will remain unknown until the opening night at Kasane. I will collect sizes and share the associated costs closer to the time.

Kyk gerus na die voorlopige, kortste roete wat ek op VFR planner gesit het en lewer kommentaar. Die link is hierbo iewers.! (!!)
Change in planning for me  ....I managed to squeeze more leave out of the Singaporians, therefore....I'll be flying all the way as well (^^) Oom Polla, is daar plek vir my in julle eskader? (!!)

I am going to do a bulk clearance request with the BCAA. So, no worries there. All you must do is clear customs at Pilanesberg/Gaborone or Polokwane/Selebi Phikwe. The guys that drive must do this as well at Groblersbrug/Martin's Drift.

I have never flown cross border, so I can't comment on the requirements. There are many LSA pilots that fly to Botswana on a weekly basis. Piet Meyer, on this forum, is just one. Waar was die probleem Oom Polla?

Ek's nie seker of daar itv papierwerk enige "besparing" is nie.
Sover ek dit het moet die vliegtuig nogsteeds die nodige klarings he om in Botswana te kan vlieg. - ongeag of dit in ge-trailer is of ingevlieg is.

Miskien net seker maak van dit......

You need all your paperwork, regardless which way you enter.

Exactly- I actually expect more hassles at the border post when trailering in, than when flying in.
Purely because it would be "not the norm" for the border official, and as such he might not be in the know of what is needed..................

You still need the overflight documents etc, and apart from that I don't think there is actually "temporary import" documents when youy FLY in. Something that MIGHT be an issue when you drive/trailer in.

just my 2c.

Hi guys.
got good and bad news today.

Good news is I managed to land another contract for the company.
Which then means (the BAD news) - I will not be able to join you on this epic trip.

I was so looking forward to this.
Please, please do a full trip report when you guy's come back.( the good, the bad and the photo's )

Enjoy and fly safe. (remember it's Africa up there - the game is not fenced in, the water is not on tap, and the afternoon rain-showers are a blessing)

Hi all,

I was sent this link from a friend who will be joining you for the trip in his aircraft, but him and his father will already be taking up all the room in his plane and have already sorted out their accommodation for the trip.

I do not fly myself, but would definitely like to do this sort of a trip in an aircraft. Are there any pilots doing the trip that need a passenger to accompany them and, since splitting the costs of the two-men chalets appears cheaper than camping alone, is there anyone that would be willing to split costs on two-man chalets for the entire trip?

You can reply here, or contact me on +27 (0) 71 493 3156.

Cheers

Paul
