Crossing the Mozambique Channel
Crossing the Mozambique Channel
I have been planning this in secret - but I can reveal today that all plans are finalised!
The flight will take me in two legs, total distance 510 miles, from Inhambane to a little Shark Research Centre, situated on the West coast of Madagascar.
I have been informed earlier this afternoon, that I may now divulge the following: I will have a fuelstop in the middle of the Channel. The US Nimitz is due in July in Cape Town for a joint exercise with the SA Navy in the combatting of piracy, and I will rendesvouz with her in the Mozambique Channel, on her way to Cape Town. She is currently stationed near the coast of Oman. This is part of the PR exercise between the SA and US Navies in demonstrating their intention to keep the East Coast of Africa safe from pirates.
This will be the first landing of a trike on an aircraft carrier!
The only baggage I will be carrying is a self inflatable life raft in the backseat, as well as a life jacket, flares, and positioning system. We are currently negotiating with the Coast Guard to keep a keen eye on me, in the event that I have to ditch in the Mozambique Channel.
The flight will be planned with the weather in mind, and I will only make my attempt once it established that I will have the help of a tailwind. Our initial planning is for early July 2012.
Thanks to everybody on this forum and elsewhere who assisted in all the planning, the work that still needs to be done, and for keeping it secret!
News 24 will be covering this expedition's planning next week in all its major papers - so watch this space.

Tagging along this is the stuff dreams are made of!
When you planning on doing it & will you be taking one of those emergency blow-up rafts with if the sea gets too rough & you have to land?

Re: Crossing the Mozambique Channel
As Asterix let the proverbial cat out of the bag, I might as well tell a bit more about the technology he will be taking with him.
The "positioning system" as my technology challenged friend calls it, is probably one of the highlights of the trip and actually the piece of technology that not only made the voyage possible but also got the buy-in from the sponsors and stakeholders. The satellite positioning system is a high data rate broad band system based o the BGan system from Inmarsat (http://www.inmarsat.com/Services/Land/S ... fault.aspx) and is part of an ongoing research project headed by the CSIR's Defence, Peace, Safety and Security (DPSS) unit (http://www.csir.co.za/dpss/index.html).
As many of you know the CSIR does a lot of research in collaboration with the US and SA navy and Air force and this specific piece of technology and the testing thereof paved the way for the co-operation of the US and SA navy. Without this being done as a DOD sanctioned experiment, the security clearances and other approvals would have been buried under a ton of red tape.
Good luck to Asterix. We will be "watching" you.......

Re: Crossing the Mozambique Channel
I received my e-mail from Capt Monger, US Nimitz, 20 minutes ago! (Can't post the link - sorry - security issues - but I made a screenshot!) I even have links in my e-mail to prepare me for my one-day stay on the ship!
I will be training for landing and take-off at Waterkloof in co-operation with people from the US Embassy and our own Airforce during May!
Apparantly it is no joke landing in a pitching sea on a deck!
Luckily, the landing and take-off will always be straight into the wind, as they will point the ships nose into the wind and slow down to 15 kts as I land from the Stern - side. So, should be very short landing and take-off rolls!

Why not just climb to 25 000 ft and get a 120 mile tailwind to slingshot you over the water?

Re: Crossing the Mozambique Channel
Classic!
Would be amazing achievement though if it were possible! Cant imagine the US Navy would ever give a civilian aircraft permission to attempt to land between a couple hundred million dollars worth of equipment?
Nice one James...
