Gyro Down in Melkbos

Postby crazydoc » Wed Apr 23, 2014 4:07 pm

As a fellow gyronaut im also shocked and saddened by this accident and all my sympathies to family and Len who i think was busy training this student.
As a low hour pilot im very interested to know about any speculation surrounding this crash. Was there any attempt at a controlled forced landing, engine trouble, nature of fire /impact or after impact ,radio contact etc etc.

Not One reply :?
One fixed wing plane crash and hundreds of posts and speculation on Avcom and many pilots learn a lot from it.At least 3 gyro crashes in the last month and not one comment. Why? Everybody says our Gyros are the safest form of flying. And i keep telling my friends and family that. My instructor, importer of my type , API and everybody tells me since the Alldays accident that gyros are more safer and wount burn. Two gyros burnt to ashes in last month (and one was a fairly controlled soft emergency landing).
What i really would like to know. 1.Was the melkbos gyro M16 fitted with "newer" type (better) fueltanks ? If so then one must likely expect to burn if you crash hard or would i benefit to change the position of my fuel overflow to aft of the prop or maybe to the front of the gyro (furthest) away from the engine.
2. I think 2 accidents was caused by flying behind the power curve? I know there is a lot of clever guys with experience on this site. Please help :) :)

The subject of post impact fires has been discussed at length on this and other forums.
Rotor wing aircraft - both helicopters and gyros, are probably more susceptible to post impact fires due to the fact that fuel is carried "inboard" and in closer proximity to the engine and thus potential ignition sources - electrics / battery / hot exhaust / turbo etc.
Robinson, Magni and various other rotor wing manufacturers offer internal bladder lined fuel tanks as an additional safety measure. To answer your question: given that Magni has only recently developed their bladder lined tank it is highly unlikely that the Magni M16 involved in this accident was fitted with the new tank.
As for your comments regarding flying behind the power curve - I guess it goes without saying that having sufficient airspeed and altitude is crucial no matter what aircraft one is flying. "To go up…pull back on the stick…to go down…pull back on the stick some more"

When did the new fuel tanks become available ?

I refer you to your post in 2011 that a prototype is already been tested for the M16

I fly a Magni gyro so I gave Butch Brown the SA Magni agent a call to find out first hand what Magni's position is on all of this. We had a very interesting discussion, the most relevant points being:

1. Magni research and development is ongoing, but in order to protect their competitve position, they generally don't make their R&D projects public knowledge until they're ready for market. As far as fuel tanks are concerned Magni has in fact previously explored various fuel tank liner options over the years, however the available technology at the time didn't allow for a workable solution to the problem of additional weight and reduced tank volume.

2. Recent technological advancements has finally allowed this to become a reality, and working in partnership with the company that currently supplies internal-lined fuel tanks for the motor racing industry, Magni already has already constructed a prototype fuel tank which is presently undergoing evaluation and testing of the internal lining.

3. Although at this stage the prototype tank is for the M16 model, once evaluation testing and B-Car Section T compliance and approval has been established, they will roll-this out to their other models as well.

Hi
Can someone with the info please help me with a few questions?

1.Is the fuel tank on the magni a separate tank that can be removed and replace, or part of the body.?
2.Is the new bladder tank available for the older models magni's. Replacement / insert?
3.Did someone in SA install such a new bladder tank on there magni?
4.Do the new models Magni's come standard with the bladder type tank?

Can't find anything with Google.
Thanks

Butch Brown is the Magni agent in SA and he is probably best able to answer your questions. His contact details here

All gyros must be fitted with a dashboard sticker.
