So sorry if I left that part out. My appolgies Lennie. Yes she is very quick and fast too. I must not forget to mention it next time round. Must make a 'note' of it... (**)
Now what is happening about the Gariep get together? I hear barks and knorre everywhere but no bites. Is 23 to 25 May still on? Is Marius running with this one? It would be great if we can do that thing again. Was great last time. vhpy

Just for the record...
Gyronaut wrote:... The Calidus took 15 ltrs, the MTOS took 10 more.
Upon further investigation and consideration, the following became apparent:

1: The Calidus has a Variable Pitch prop - which we know is actually a fuel range extender, the MTOS did not.
2: The Pilot and Pax in the MT weigh significantly more than the crew of the Calidus. 3" more MP during the cruise.
3: The MT started off with an 'almost' full tank while the Calidus was FULL
4: The MT had a suspected stuck float during part of the trip (surging power)

In light of the above I am satisfied that the Calidus is faster and more fuel efficient as a result of its reduced drag - but not as markedly so when comparing these two, as I did.

Flynote, did I mention that the Calidus is fast?

:-)

I took a 1,7 hour flight one-up last weekend.

Still learning the ideal manifold/RPM settings (Like to hear your comments)

I filled her up just before take off and again to the same mark after the flight and used 25 liters.

I think this is great economy.

I really feel so guilty that I am letting my buddy Lennie the klop- klop man down by keeping him in the dark. I am not very good at expressing myself clearly in words hence the confusion re the speed of the Calidus. Lennie I must confess that I totally underplayed the info regarding the speed of the Calidus. If I mentioned in passing that the Calidus is , by the way, reasonably fast when compared to other gyros, I appologise profusely. I was incorrect in the assumption. Hy is f$@#n vinnig!! ##

Vertical Tango wrote:Hi Flynote,

For the last 6 months I have been looking at the horrible looking single seaters from the States. I remember the fun I used to have flying in the 80's my Quicksilver MX2 at 60 km/h. Flying from Baragwanath to Rietfontein was requiring proper x-country planning, but it was the same fun as to fly JHB to Durban. To come back to your nightmare, which I know is not one anymore as you have probably taken the jump already, is to have 2 gyros. I want to keep my Xenon for its comfort, and have one of those single seaters, completely open, the one you open your toes and see houses in between, that cost no more than R50,000, runs on a 503 or 532. It will beat any local gyro on manoevres, cruises around 55 mph, but who cares, its only for the fun. You will do Tedderfield / Parys like a breeze, have tremendous fun without any instrument, just a radio, and keep the Rolls for the government or go to Cape-Town.
All the best with your new love.

JP
