2 stroke oil for ratex again.

Postby MILO » Mon Feb 09, 2015 7:45 pm

(**) Love this topic. Pops up at regular intervals.
I found Total super 2 stroke 5 litres for R175 at otk afgri.
Checked the specs and its ok for the 503 and 582. This works out at 17.50 per 500ml.
My last purchase from Total was R42 for 500ml.
Mega saving if you decant.

HHHhhhmmmmm, what say the "Experst" :?: As a Tree Surgeon I have worked my whole working life(33 years) with chainsaws, and learnt that there is a 2stroke oil for aircooled, and another for watercooled 2 stroke engines. Some oil companies make a dual purpose oil. In my opinion, always use the aircooled 2stroke oil because it is a higher specification oil.

But is it suitable for a watercooled engine ?

I have done 150 hours on my windlass 503 using Total super two stroke, advise from my instructor, I have had no problems at all.
I have just bought myself a kitfox 2 with the 582, please advise as too which oil is the best for the 582 and the 503 together, I don’t want to be using two different oils, could become a ball ache.

To all intent , yes, because an aircooled engine runs at higher cyl head temps than a watercooled. Therefore the oil`s ability to lubricate under more extreme heat is at a higher specification.

So glad this has come up as I get conflicting opinions all the time
I use full synthetic Motul 710 in my 582
It is probably the most expensive oil on the market, but I figure if it is the best then that is what I want running through my motor.
Works out to around R170.00 per 500ml
Anyone with real technical knowledge who can tell me how good or otherwise this is.
As stated, I get opinions 180 degrees opposed to each other and would really like to know.
Until then, I figure it is good and will continue using, even if it means I have to fly a few less hours to stay in budget.

Rotax 582 watercooled = Castrol TC - W3 Super Outboard Plus @ R100 per litre.

I do not agree (I am no expert) that if an oil is suitable for the higher temps of an aircooled engine, then it is fine for a water cooled engine.

Firstly, I am under the impression that a water cooled combustion chamber is hotter than an air cooled engine, it is just that with a water jacket around the chamber, the heat is easily dissipated, secondly, if an oil is designed to be suitable for say a hotter, water cooled engine, and is used in a "cooler" engine, it is possible that not all of the oil will be burnt, causing gumming up over time.

My first 503 went to 750 hours with no failure (tolerances were at max) and my second is at 350 hours, ALL of the time has been with chain saw oil - mostly Castrol

Bottom line, if it falls within Rotax's specs no problem.
