Low EGT on one cylinder Rotax

Postby Makoppa » Tue May 27, 2014 8:31 am

Hi fellow Aviators

I am flying a Xenon gyro with a Rotax Turbo motor. My cockpit is equiped with a Oddysey Stratomaster system, indicating inter alia EGT on each cylinder as well ad 2 CHT readings.

On my return flight yesterday from Cumberland to Rustenburg I noticed that the one EGT reading indicated around 450 whilst all 3 others indicated a normal 790 range.

I am not a petrol head, but did not experience any recognisable drop in power.

Any ideas pls?

Regards

1. Swap the probes if possible and see if the problem also moves, if it does, it is a temperamental probe. Replace it. It is normally very easy to swap the probes. Might be a faulty probe.

2. If the problems still persists it might be a dead plug, meaning you are running on 3 cylinders. Use the same method of troubleshooting, swap the plugs around.

Do the above on the ground, run the engine up and do your checks like that. This is not a big problem I am sure. Will take 30min to do both of the above tests.

Probes, spark plugs and carb balancing -- id check these in that order.
